Training

Hi all,

I love to use the C2 rankings as a motivator for better times in my workouts. My goal is to end the year ranked in the top 10 % for my age and weight in as many distances as possible. But I have noticed that a lot of the heavy hitters from last year are not yet entered onto the C2 rankings this year. Maybe indoor season is just starting?

I've been at it 6 months and I am still getting PBs at different distances but I am reluctant to go after my 2K PB cause it always hurts the most after that attempt.

Anyways my question to you all is... What race distance(or time race) during training do you feel is the toughest for you to achieve your PB at?( and/or - the toughest to get motivated even to try for).

Cheers,
Jazz

I agree the 2k, no doubt. But I also think that is the distance at which most of us race the most seriously and to exhaustion, so our expectations are higher and so the PBs are that much harder.

I enjoy rowing 10k's in contrast.

Although the rankings may move more at the top where you are, I have found that the percentages don't change that much during the season, since as many people add ranked pieces at the low end as at the high end at any given time (ie a piece ranked at 50% now, will stay around that level the rest of the season). I have never actually tracked whether they actually go up in % though, since I focus more on how go down in % when I hit a new PB.

Now that I think about the % thing I feel a little dumb because that makes sense what you said. I have only done one 10K time trial at not 100% so I'm not worried about beating that one. I guess people have probably attempted 2K bests more often so it becomes increasingly harder to beat PBs at that distance.

Cheers,

Definitely 2k. After failing (painfully) to break 7:00 in 2003, I didn't even attempt it again until this year. Then I did one "for fun" in 7:04 at the end of a long workout (so no expectations and thus no pressure). This set me up for a serious try last week: 6:57.7

I think the 2k is so tough because it's the longest event where you have to hang right on your lactic acid threshold to get a reasonable time.

Alex

As painful and unpleasant as 2ks are, I've gotta say, I think the worst thing I've ever tried is a 30min test. The first 20min aren't too bad (probably in part because I'm used to 20min tests) but the last 10min are just hell on earth.
Just my 2 cents

Heather Johnson
F20 HWT 5'7"
2k 7:32.2 20min 5057 30min 7481

The Half-Marathon, because it takes a lot of meters to train for it, there's plenty of time for things to go wrong, and sometimes all you get for your effort is 20s faster.
