Just finished my first ever and possibly only ever 100k erg. It took 9hrs 7min and 27.7 secs and was quite possibly the most painful thing I've ever done in my entire life.<br>The first 22k just flew right along at a 2:20 split and then I hit a wall that killed me for 3k. After this I slowed down my pace by about 8secs and continued on relatively comfortably with the exception of a bit of chafing in the armpits until the halfway mark.<br>The next 15k were just miserable with waves of pain continually harrassing me. After this I managed to get another wind and get a good pace back, about another 10secs slower than my second pace(the other sections varied wildly because I was struggling just to keep going.).<br>The last 20k were just a matter of trying to finish. I just took it 1k at a time and spent a lot of time grimacing. I took it down for the last 1k into the 2:20s and even managed to get the split under 2 for the final 150meters. <br>All in all I would never suggest for anyone to do this, I've done many marathons and they're not bad, but this was just torture, altho the bragging rights are nice. After about 2-3 hrs I could finally walk correctly again. BTW thanks to everyone who gave food suggestions. 100k? That's sick! Congrats! <br><br>I went 60 minutes on Monday and thought that was a long way. 9+ hours is to be commended!

Congratulations. Are you sure you'll never do one again? After all you were so close to breaking into the 8s <br><br>Give us more info. Seat padding? What did you eat? What kind of breaks did you take - were they short enough to keep the monitor going all the way up?<br><br><br>Alex

Good effort Heather, it takes a lot of mental toughness to do one of these monsters!! I'm surprised you hit the wall after only 22k though, how much specific training did you do? I worked on my cruising speed until it was effortless, but still hit the wall after about 70k.

Fairly sure I'll never do one again, although wait a few months and we'll see, I might start going bonkers again. No padding on the seat. One of my first days ever rowing I was told that only wusses use butt pads(altho this is certainly not true) and it just kinda seeped into my psyche so that I prefer the bare seat.<br>For the first half or so my breaks were about 30secs every 5k. After that the breaks tended to come closer to every 2500 except for the few parts where I managed to cruise again. <br>I drank 2 64 oz bottles of lemon-lime gatorade, and about 98oz of water. I consumed about 7 packets of Gu(vanilla bean flavor is the best in my experience), some raisins, and half a powerbar(I just couldn't get all the way through it). I had fig newtons for after as well as bananas.<br>As to specific training to be honest that was a point of stupidity on my part. Mostly I have just been doing steady state training on the water. I almost never erg anymore. My workouts on the water have been running about 1hr13min long steady states (with brief pauses to turn around and grab water, Miami in the summer is very hot).<br>As for where I did it I was down at the boathouse in one of the boat bays. For the first third or so I had a good amount of support as the boathouse is busy in the mornings. After that I would see maybe one person every hour or so. In the last 20k some construction workers showed up to do some more work on the boathouse and just the presence of other people helped keep me going. <br>I listened to one of the local radio stations for entertainment.<br><br>Heather

Heather,<br>Sorry should have asked in one post but do you think rowing on water was better training for this event, Technique wise I think it would be better but I speak as someone who has never rowed on water as I think theres enough trouble in the world without me having to be rescued every couple of minutes. <br>Ian

I most definitely do not think that on water training is better for an event like this, it just happens to be what I do because I'm primarily an on water rower. This event was a little bit of a spur of the moment decision to do as these things go. If I were to get really really serious about one of these I would definitely start doing lots of half-marathons and the like on the erg to prepare. There's just a kind of tedium factor with erging that you don't get on the water.<br><br>Heather<br><br>
