I'm afraid I'm addicted to the erg. I've moved to water and I really miss the numbers.

Has anyone had any luck with the Garmin Forerunner when used for water rowing? It's designed for running and provides speed and distance feedback in realtime using GPS technology.

Here's a link to this uber-geek device:

<a href='http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... IT doesn't give youa stroke rate, but who cares, you can get several devices that will.

I've gone as far as to get two of these so both in the 2x get to see the data and know that what they are doing is having a positive (or other) effect.

Stick with the 201 (rechargable and software upgradeable), set up the auto-pause feature for 12:00/km and it starts somewhere in the middle of your first stroke, but will not start counting due to drifting in the wind or small current.

I have a SpeedCoach Gold also, but until you take the time to calibrate (using the forerunner for instance), it is not much good for absolute measurements. One more thing, no external parts to mount on your boat.

- Paul Smith

PS - If you have a 1" tube wing rigger there is a nifty bike mount also. If the tube is larger than that, the wrist strap will likely do the trick. If neither of those describe your situation, a bit ov sticky backed velcro will solve the problem.
