Training

Post by [old] Peter T » June 18th, 2004, 11:46 am

On the 10th of August I will have achieved 75 years of life experience, ( nice way of putting it, eh ), and to celebrate the occasion I will row 75000 meters in support of my local YMCA. Plans are being put in place as to how to set up sponsors and the like but, I've got to put my a** on the line ( as it were ) and perform !

I am looking for training tips from those persons that have done the long hauls, particularly those of advanced years: at this moment nutrition appears to be the major stumbling block.

I have a trainer who is working with me to develop a stepped program of increases mileage, but hey, we don't know everything and what works for a 25 year old may nor be appropriate for a senior.

Guidance is requested !

Peter T

Hey Peter, upmost respect to you for taking the plunge and going long, hope you are willing to take advice from a 19yro sprog!!
I did a solo 100k in April and started a thread over on the U.K forum discussing training, nutrition, tactics etc, there were a few other people who did it around the same time, namely Guy W and Chris tippin, do a search on from the old messages on this board and you should come up with some useful stuff. The link to the U.K forum is:

http://www.concept2.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... >

I hope this is of some use to you, feel free to send me a private message if you have any questions.
Hi Ash,

Thank you for your words of encouragement and the URL to your posts, which I have read withh great interest. There are several points, ( band-aid the nipples being one ) which had slipped me, yet I recall from my running days just how painful ( forget erotic ! ) they can become.

Nutrition remains my big concern: what, when and how much: the fluids I believe I have a handle on ( cytromax powder in solution seems to sit well with no aftertaste ), but I know I'm going to have to take solid food and I have no idea what to take: peanut butter and jelly has protein and carbs with some sugar but, for eight hours ! There has to be someting relatively bland so as to not upset the tummy but with the needed ingredients for the long haul.

Comments from you or any other long hauler will be appreciated and, ASAP so that I can try them out before taking the big step.

Peter T

Hmmm, food? During my row i think i consumed 3 bananas, these seem to be the preferred choice by most people. Sliced up to save time, also had a few jelly babies as a treat every now and again.

Make sure you have a low glycemic index meal before you start, this will help to metabolize fat as an energy source and prolong the inevitable running out of carbs, or as it is better known, "hitting the wall" I really hit the wall at about 15k to go, but the pace was so slow that i was able to maintain the average.

Have you settled on a target pace and breaks?
