At the last AGM of the ACSM in San Francisco, Dr. William Haskell (speaking at the Michaewl Pollock lecture), the person who came out with the widely accepted formula, 220-age admitted that he just thought of this formula out of the blue, & it was not arrived at out of research. He says he gets scared when people use this formula as if it is engraved in stone. It is only meant as a guide, because there is a variation of 15 beats above & below thie figure arrived at, and a person can base his max HR on the wrong figure when using it.
Many other formulae have come out since, such as Kaminsky's 205 - 1/2 age which appears to be closer to normal for most people, but it is much better to test out your max if you do not have a heart condition.
My own max HR from 220-age reads 159
From 205 - 1/2 age, it becomes 174.
When erging on a 2K time trial, it reaches 155
When erging a marathon, it averages 135
When race walking 1K, it jumps up to 194.
So I hardly use the HR monitor nowadays.
KC61
