Training

Post by [old] Gary Blackman » May 26th, 2004, 11:46 am

On the training thread, there was an incident that Jim Barry posted, which i thought would make an interesting thread, of what can go wrong in a training session, so thought i would start a thread so that you can vent your frustration when things go wrong during training...

So just to start us off....i quote Jim Barry
"Yesterday I was going for a hard 30 minute session and was settling in comfortably in the zone. I was ready to wrap up the last 8 minutes when my towel caught the rollers while at the catch and jammed it on the rail, dead. I did not really know it until I drove without my seat coming with me and landed right on the rail! Ohhh. As a fan of good slapstick, I had to laugh a little, but I was mad at the same time. It is the weirdest feeling to have things go wrong on the erg. It is liking having your bed collapse in the middle of the night or something. I rowed out the last 8 minutes easy and then recomposed and did a 10 minute session at the same hard pace. "
and then my current pet hate!

"my current moan, is all my long rows (over 5km) i do listening to music on the minidisc...and the headphones has one of those little remotes on, which i normally clip into the shorts, but the odd session now and again, the clip comes undone, and the lead just swings backwards and forwards, and it gets so annoying, that eventually i have to stop to clip it in again..."
I just read the reprinted story from Jim Barry. Any male who ever thought of rowing naked should read Jim's story first and contemplate what might happen.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Most annoying thing that ever happened to me when training on the ergo was when I was doing a 2k test in the gym a couple of months back. I was feeling good so decided to try to just edge out my 6:11.8 pb. So I rowed my normal race plan of hard at the start, 1:34's through the middle, and then a fast last 500 to get the split down to where I want it. At half way it felt great and I was sure I was on for a pb. I wasn't in a race, so wasn't going to give absolutely everything, just a matter of when I speed up to get the pb.

I had it on average split and knew that my current pb was 1:33.0 average, and so just needed to dip under that for a pb. I got it down to 1:33.0 with about 200m to go I think, still feeling strong, so a pb in the bag. With about 100m to go it went to 1:32.9, yes! Then continued pulling hard to the end and it might have just flicked to 1:32.8 at the end.

In my excitement to have done a pb I let go of the handle, and it hit the monitor arm. This was enough vibration to send the batteries flying out of the back of the monitor. I never knew what time I rowed, and so don't know exactly what my 2k pb is!!!

Pete
If you erg enough, the probability of bad things happening increases.

Some things that I have done:

Was on track for a 2K Pb, feeling fairly good with only 650m remaining. Then the batteries died.

I was rowing a very fast HM on my patio on a cool day without my shirt. I was near a PB. Then it started to hail with about 10 minutes remaining. Concentrating on rowing was very difficult when the sky was peppering my bare back with ice pellets.

About 1,5K into a very hard 2K, my son, who was about 4 cried out for help on the toilet. It is very hard to help anyone do anything when your heart is racing around 175 bpm! I stopped and got there in time. But my son couldn't figure out why I was all drippy and couldn't talk properly.

The straps from my *** DELETE - SPAM *** chair seat cushion getting tangled in the rollers 25K through a marathon.

But the most annoying thing pertaining to the erg is being dropped in the middle of an e-race. This happens too often. I surely hope that the e-row version of Row Pro provides relief from this aggrivation.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

I sure everyone's had it - doing a 30min this afternoon, and the footstraps kept coming loose, so I had to continually tighten them on the recovery (as I'd forgot to double them back on themselves). Rather amusing for the rest of the people in the gym to see me spitting fire every 3 minutes as I sorted myself out.

Ooooh just thought of another one. Someone goes and puts on Richard and Judy at 4 o'clock on the television behind the rowing machines and turns my music off the radio. Mortal sin that.

Xav
