Samroot said that the UK forum seems more amenable to runners who row and vice versa. This thread is for the USA forumites who also run. Details of races run, good runs or more from Jim Barry extolling the virtues of his Nike Frees can be posted here.

As both myself and Jim Barry are running races this weekend I am sure we can post details later.

Sam mentioned he might run in the last X/C of the series. When does the X/C season start in the USA, what terrain and distances does it consist of?

In the UK we often have a county league of 4 races from October to mid-December. Each one will be 6 miles or so. Normally on parkland, through woods and over a couple of streams. You are expected to get pretty muddy.

After Xmas there will be some of the bigger championships. I can compete in the Yorkshire, the Northern and then the Big Daddy, the National. This is a major event with between 1300-1600 runners taking part in a mass cavalry charge to the first corner. Pretty exciting for a spectator but not much fun if you are in stuck in the middle or near the back.

If fit I would hope to be sub 40 and maybe sub 39 on a good day. Never raced many 10Ks but my best was 34-35 minutes, quite a few years ago. I know I have done a 57:04 for 10 miles. I was better at the longer stuff, more off-road and longer distance moorland/trail races

Depending on how positive I feel after tomorrows race I might post my longer-term training plans

Impressive!
I ran about that speed some 20 years ago, but my weight was about 135 lbs!

Good luck Johnny for your race tomorrow, and let us know how it went.

I am a rower who loves to run.
I have always wanted to complete a marathon, but now I've decided to do it before I'm 40!
My actual challenge is to complete the "Maratón de Donostia" on november 27th with a DIY-trainingplan.
The targets are:
1st: finish the marathon
2nd: achieve an acceptable time (whatever this may mean)
3d: doing this having rowed as much as possible, and run only as much as necessary (I am a bit too heavy for a long distance runner, and my knees are reminding me of the many many miles running on the road when I was younger... ).
Therefor tomorrow I am running a test half marathon race in Vilafranca (near Barcelona).
Actually I am trying to maintain 6 workouts a week, only 2 of them running (late in the night, often ending at about midnight).
If I more or less match my target time during the marathon, I will post some more details about my training schedule in the thread"Running a marathon without stopping to row/erg"
This season (since january) I have run about 640 km. (plus 920 km rowing on the water, 800 km erging and 955 km biking) My PB for running the 10k (after 1987) is 43:46, so I don't think johnny is t h a t slow.
I recognize that the best workout to row faster is rowing, but I also just think that x-trainig is more fun!! Nevertheless, after completing the marathon, I think I will drastically reduce my running mileage.

Have fun!

Good luck with your HM Ancho.

Finished my 10 miler today in 75:49. Sounds a pretty bad time but overall I am pretty pleased.

I got to 7 miles in 48:05 and the worst of the hills were over and I was feeling good. I was looking at 68:xx with maybe a chance of getting inside 68 minutes.
My shoe lace came undone and I stopped to fasten it. On restarting, almost immediately I got a strain in my calf. I had to stop to stretch it out but kept on running until 8 miles, although a little bit slower.

At 8 miles on a steep downhill it locked up solidly and I had to run/jog/hop/walk the last 2 miles and saw a procession of runners go past. So 75:49 was not too bad.

When I first started wearing motion control shoes it was because of problems with my right calf and recently I havre had problems on the left side so I am looking at some gait analysis and orthotics when I get analyzed in 2 weeks time.

I am really happy with how I ran today with not a lot of training. I am frustrated with the injury but at least I finished and I had a very good workout up to 7 miles. I now need to do a lot of stretching as I have an X/C race in 2 weeks time

Hi there johnnybike et al,

I'm a runner turned C2 rower. I bought a C2 when I moved to Canada (it's not just a US forum jb ) from the UK, in order to save my ageing knees.

I love doing both forms of exercise, so I usually let the weather dictate whether I do a run or an erg.

I do nearly all of my running and erging aerobically (at around 70% of MHR). Currently my 10K time on the erg is around 41 mins and my running 10K time is 45 mins at the 70% level.

I ran a half marathon earlier this year in 1:29:30 and I'm hoping to beat my 10k running PB (currently 39 mins) this December.

The XC season has already started in Calgary and we've just had our first snowfall in the city.

However, I did a race in the mountains (at around 7,000 ft above sea level) in early September and was running in a blizzard and 8 inches of snow

Ancho, nice HM and looking for a 3:15-3:20 marathon perhaps. What time are you thinking about?

Rob, sorry about missing Canada out, such a small place, easy to lose

The 39 min 10k and the 1:29 HM seem to fit together well. Not done a HM for many years (last one was 75:30 so I don't think I will be getting near that again) but that is about the time that I would be looking at, maybe a couple of minutes faster.

My first and slowest HM was 1:30 and I am not prepared to do one now if it is likely I could not beat that time. I might have to swallow my pride one day.

The HM's would be empty if everyone thought like that

Mind you, it might make the Great North Run a little more bearable.

FYI (being from Leeds), my 10K PB was set at the Abbey Dash about 13 years ago, and my HM PB (1:27 'ish) in York the following spring.

So, what I'm really trying to do with my running is "halting the ageing process" (mainly because I have reasonably soft pb's)
They are both fast courses and they are both still going strong.

York gets full within about 2 days and Leeds has just got too big. Over 2500 runners now, expensive and too narrow at the beginning.

My HM PB was set at Blackpool and my FM PB was set at Leeds when the course was advertised as 'The Hard One'. It was as well, right up to Cookridge water tower so the first 16 miles was almost all uphill. I ran 2:46.59 and I am sure I could gave broken 2:45 on a flatter course. But I never ran another and in fact did not run for 8 years after that day.

Saturday's 10k went really well (43:58, 10th of 34 in my age division). Strong the whole way. Sub 7:00 pace for the last half; sprint across the finish. All well within myself. PB by 1:40 and that's on less training (but longer runs). I've run about 2x a week over the last few months but often over 80' when I do. Mixing in a lot of trail running and soon more running on the Nike Frees.

It was exciting enough that I'm laying out what it might take for an assault on the loftier goals like a 38:00 10k. Might take a few years. That is a 17% increase in training speeds according to Jack Daniels' VDOT formulas/paces.

Thanks John!

You can't even take one day off for bereavement without things piling up.

I did get away Sunday for the xc race.as we had no out of town relatives visiting the house. It was a challenging, genuine,up and down 4 mi. course. I did it in 30:27-nothing to crow about, but did finish ahead of a couple of team mates I usually finish behind. Real xc,constantly breaking stride-too many rocks to do barefoot, but I did do it in the frees.

John-we have an upstate NY xc series consisting of 5 races-the last being a championship for double points. The races are held at various courses in central to western NY. The sites are never the same from year to year, and some courses are tamer than others. They usually get from 150 to 200 runners. There is a link at
GVH.NET,on the left.

Nice run John-thats a great time for so much up and down.

Jim great run, I can defintely see a 38 min. 10k in your future. I think there is something to be said for the less is more approach. I think it is still possible to see improvement, running only 2,3 times a week, supplemented with cross training.

Calgary Rob-the hardest xc race I ever ran was in Kamloops,BC-an 8k lung buster at the Canadian masters in 2000??.

Ancho good luck in the half. I think your on the right track. What I haven't gotten to is I've committed to running a marathon down in Florida in 2-1/2 weeks-more on this later.

Three straight days of 0600 10ks barefoot slogging along in the dark for half of it,through fridgid muddy puddles as happy as if I had a brain! Its so addictively elemental.

"Okay"-snapped back to reality-petitioned for more reports-back to the rock pile
