Let's face it: Indoor rowing is dead boring for a spectator of the street.

Then I met Jon Goodall from the UK. He told me about relay racing! Now that sounds spectacular. Rowers only pull ten strokes and roll of the erg to give the spot to the next team member. This type of racing has HUGE potential here in the US. Ten strokes is short enough that you don't have to be an endurance monster.

Food for thought people. Always looking to think outside of the box.

Xeno
www.gorow.com
Relay racing is a regulat at the UK GP series, can't believe you haven't heard about it before. This picture is the MAD Team with Jon Goodall in charge at a GP event

<img src='

Hi Xeno

I think that the U.S.A could put together one hell of a relay team together; you guys have some huge American Footballers.
There must also be some young college guys out there into power lifting too.

When you see a team relay in full flight it is something to behold, seeing guys pulling 1:04-1:10 splits for over 4 hours.

I think Jon passed you a copy of the DVD we had made of the100k World Record, it's only short, but you get to the team going at full speed.

Sir Pirate
yeh relay racing is the way to go ...I have done two now and phew but what a larff... even I managed to get down to pulling below 1.30's but it ain't easy . I have every respect for the Mad team for the world record for the 100k.

A few of the Grand Prix's do them usually 3k and believe me doing ten strokes as fast as you can every minute is a killer and everyone collapses after .

Dwayne/Xeno

Dwayne you would be ideal member for a relay with your power and size. We should get a UK v USA challenge going.

The MAD Team verses The best of the USA. If we get our heads together on this, I think we could raise a fair amount of money for charity and promote the sport at the same time.

Another thought, we could put a "all stars" team together with people from both countries (and or others) to have a crack at beating our Current World Record.

Any thoughts?

Sir Pirate
Xeno-

I've read about a few of the UK team relays. They sound insane/intense. People are hopping on and off the erg and doing 10-15 strokes while having someone hold onto their feet. The stunning thing to me is the times. Split are in the 1:10 - 1:15 range even accounting for the changes. It goes on for 4 hours. Wow!!

Have you ever tried to gauge you best single pull? What about you, Dwayne?

As for getting this going, you (and others) should organize a team to challenge the 100K world record by the British group I won't name for fear of misindentifying. You could have it done at the Iron Oarsman and get media coverage, etc. There are several categories of teams if you want to organize more than one. Clearly, Dwayne would be a your #1 recruit at this point along with Jamie Schroeder and others you'd know better than I. Also, if you could get some football players that might help. You may want to wait until February when football season is over. BTW, the ultimate prize recruit for both potential and media interest would be Karl Malone. (Have you seen his physique?) He live in Newport as you know.

Good luck,

Neil

Relay races are a blast, only time I'll ever be able to say I've beat Tiff Wood at something...
In Portland OR they have an erg race every year (I think it's called the New World Rowing Indoor Rowing Championships now) and at the very end they hold a relay race. The teams are 4 people each, usually mixed and usually tossed together that morning, and the race is 2k with each person rowing 500 meters straight. Some of the most fun I've ever had on an erg is during those relays.
I'd never heard of the get on for 10 strokes style of them tho, that would be a sight to see.

Heather Johnson
F20 158lbs 5'7"
2k 7:32.2 20min 5057 30min 7481

Blimey!! What have I started

The relays are good fun although the last 100k we did bordered on very dangerous from a safety point of view.

The 3k relay is very popular in the UK at the GP's as mentioned. I've always felt that a 10 person, 10,000m relay would be a good distance from a spectator point of view as it's short enough (25-30 min) to keep people interested and people could really red-line it without much worry of injury.

Another relay distance we used to do in the UK was the 8 person 5000m relay. They were great fun!!

One record that is lying dormant is the Large Team 100k. The rules are you can have as many as you like. After Leander did their 4:23 record in 2001 a USA Large Team did 4:22 which still stands as a record. The good thing with a large team is that you get much more rest between goes which means much faster splits.

In the UK back in July we did a mixed Large Team with about 17 people ranging from 7yrs old to 60+ in aid of Cancer Research. Because of the longer rest between goes I was pulling 1:09 - 1:10 on just about every single go and wasn't even aching afterward. On a normal 10 man 100k is would take about 4-5 days before I can walk properly again.

The Model D only goes up to 50,000m on the display and we've been talking about starting 50k as a new relay distance as it's short enough to not take too much of a toll on your body from a WR point of view, and because of time limits most have with families and all, the 50k could be more appealing. Next June in Coleshill UK there is going to be a 50k relay charity day open to anyone who wants to put a team in. It has previously been a 100k.

Hope you all didn't mind me chipping in with a few thoughts. I should look at the US forum more often!!

Cheers

Jon

P.S. Dwayne: I can pull 1:07 at 55spm and I'm only 6'0/205lbs and don't have much of a weights background so think you should do this or better!! You might want to try a 100m test: If so, just make a note of your spm, your ave/500m pace and if you can remember your lowest split as well, that'd be good I've always like 100m sprints as they aren't time consuming

Jon, Dwayne, Neil, and everyone else,
Let's get organized.
Dwayne, are you up for the two man 100000 world record?
Jon how would we do that? Tufte and his partner rowed five thousand meters each time... that seems to be too long, too much fatigue and too much time to recover. Five hundred meters each time?
I am really excited about this because this could really become a tremendous business here in the USA. Corporate challenges and all, hell professional teams!
XENO
www.gorow.com
Do we have any sponsors to put up some money for such a venture?
Let's not ever forget Jon as being the one who put the seed in our brains about this. This can become huge.
