First Marathon...

I saw on another thread someone posted a picture of the mug you get from C2 after completing a marathon.

I want that sucker.

Hey, what can I say, it doesn't take much to motivate me. I'll get the mug and get closer to my goal of a million meters.

I've read the marathon training schedule and I've done pretty much all of it. I row for at least an hour every day. Lately I've been doing 10 miles a day (16,095 meters). 10 miles takes me about an hour and 10 mins or so.

I'm not really looking to get a great time on the marathon since I don't really know what to expect. I just want the mug, to take a sizeable chunk out of the quest for a million and to do something I've never done before. I'll worry about getting a good time on the next one

Does anyone have any tips/advice? I plan on having a stack of dvds next to me that I can throw on my dvd player. I figure it'll keep me entertained.

Any help is appreciated. I plan on doing it sometime within the next week or so.

Thanks!

Erging 1h each day is more than enough for completing your first marathon. I did 30-40k/week when I did my first marathon. I have finished 3 marathon's now (one each year) and never did more than 60k/week.

I would advise to do 2-3 HM's and one 25-30k beforehand. That should be enough.

Pacing: try HM pace + 10sec for your first marathon. I managed HM+7sec for my most recent marathon (3h03m).

It is going to hurt anyway , especially around the 30k mark. But is is worth it.

Tom
I also rowed about an hour a day and had completed 3 HM's before I did my first full marathon. It wasn't that much harder (physically) than a HM, just a lot longer time-wise. I didn't do any specific training for the full either, I just figured I would try it, and I could always bail out around the HM mark if I didn't think I could make it. It's really not that bad, especially if you are doing 16k a day. Just make sure to have some good DVDs to watch so you can keep your mind off what you're doing.

I love my C2 Marathon mug.

QUOTE(The Dude Abides @ Aug 15 2005, 06:35 AM)

Does anyone have any tips/advice? Marathon was on Sunday 17th April. I'd rowed a HM on 25th March to see how bad the pain in my bum would be.

On the day, I broke the distance down into 5,300m chunks with a positive view to drinking, wiping off some of the sweat, towelling the handle, shifting my bum for 20-40secs rest after each segment. I printed a page in Excel with those split distances. Completed in 3:14:28.8.

I'm rowing a "Marathon and Million Row" on 10th Sept. As I will also get to my first million metres with that 42,195m effort. (I've got 69K to row between now and then).
I'm looking closely at whether a 2.07.977 (3hrs dead) split is possible. I'm going with the folded soft towel on the seat this time.

If you feel like giving your hard earned cash, please sponsor Carole Mac (she's rowing a 100K on 10th Sept).
http://concept2.ipbhost.com/index.php?s ... 286
I also rowed a M to finish my first million. I did another M this past winter. I think if you can row an hour strongly, you can finish the M in terms of rowing ability. Doing some half Ms and then a 30k do help with the mental confidence. Practice grabbing a water bottle and drinking while you try to row, since this is useful and helps, even if you also plan to stop.

Rowing a M without stopping at all would be difficult to me, since eating and drinking are much harder, and my butt would just be killing me. If your goal is just to finish, I would plan on stopping for 2-3 minutes, 2-3x total, since that can make a big difference. I changed butt padding, working up to bubble wrap at the end. Blisters on the hands can also be a problem, and my hands did get very tired and sore. I may try to go under 3 hours next time which means I will eliminate or reduce the breaks, but that will be the first time I row a M for speed and not just to finish (I think I can easily row 2:07 for the M).

I found DVDs hard to manage during my last M. When I would stop, my hands would be shaking and I would be dripping sweat, so handling the DVDs was a challenge. Maybe it is my player, but they boot up very slowly, and then you are standing there holding the remote waiting to get going while the menus load, etc. So a lovely assistant to help you with your DVDs would be great.

I think they are great for motivation and in their own way can actually be fun. Good luck and enjoy.

I am planning to row a marathon Sept. 3 on RowPro. It should prove to be quite entertaining as both Andreas and Michael will be there and can row times around 2:35.

Rowing with company helps pass the time. There are two marathons scheduled on RowPro last Sun of August and First Sun of Sept. See http://www.digitalrowing.com/default.aspx?ItemId=45 for details of rowing with RowPro.

Some tricks to ease bum pain:

Row with the handle between the knees for 100m out of every 1K.

Have extra padding/cushions ready if needed.

Change foot height after 25K.

Also, take a quick two gulps of energy drink every 5K so you can row strong the entire distance.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Well, I did it!

I hurt like crazy right now, especially in my inner thighs and lower back. my time was 3:45:35, not too good, i wanted 3:30 or so and I was on that pace until about the last 7,500 meters of the piece where the pain in my lower back really set in.

I drank about 5 bottles of 20 oz water throughout the row, taking quick breaks to take a few gulps. Staying hydrated and healthy was my main concern. however, in the last 7,500 my breaks became more frequent, i needed to stand up and stretch out my back...my ass didn't hurt that much suprisingly, i didn't use a towel or anything. now that i've wound down, my knees hurt and ache some, but i'm usually quick to recover, this shouldn't last more than a day.

And i'm STARVING!! Almost as soon as i was done i called domino's. Pizza will be here soon.

Now gimme my mug!! ) I can't wait to drink a beer out of that thing when it gets here.

Thanks for the advice guys!

Great job on completing the M.

Personally, I think it helps to eat and/or consume calories if you are doing anything over 2 hours. I have done many more long bike rides than rows over 2 hours, but I think you are at serious risk of bonking if you don't eat anything. That may have been part of your problem in the last 7500m. There was a long discussion about the nutritional needs for someone who was going to do the 100k last year, and so this point was discussed a lot then (many people do row M's without eating, but they are usually coming in at 2:45 or better, not 3:45, and I think that extra hour makes a big, big, difference).

My lower back starts really acting up around 2 hours 15 into the row. I can't imagine going for at least another hour. I just want to get it over with at that point. As I pass the 2:30 mark, I keep thinking how lucky the likes of Torr Foss and Xeno are to be finished!

Well done in hanging in there and doing it! You deserve your first of many mugs.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
I could never sit on an erg for 3 hours and 45 minutes, no way.

The longest piece I ever did was in the winter when i did a 2 hr erg piece around 23 spm. it was non-stop and i finished with 2:10 split or somthing but it was actually the worst pain ever in my ass. i couldnt even do a cool down. i couldnt even stretch. you guys are crazy!!

then again it was non-stop and i didnt have a tv all i had was crappy gym techno and the concept C erg whizzing away.

great job on the M.
