Those of you who have been around for a while know that mud season here in Vermont can only mean one thing - the online ranking season is drawing to a close for the year.

Each season I've tried as hard as I can to improve the ranking/logs. This year I have in mind several things that i'm planning on implementing based on usage patterns and request - please take a look and comment/flame or add to...

1. Searchable people finder
Enter last name, see list of matches, click and see list of ranked pieces.

2. Training partner.
Enter the ID# of your training partner in your profile, have them do the same. Where a match exists, each person will have a link to view their partner's log book. Each partner will also rec. an automatic email any time their partner makes an entry into their log.

3. Bring the graphics a bit inline with the new Concept2.com website (i'm not going to go overboard with this - NO FLASH IN RANKING...)

4. Better "rower of the day". Incorporate these smiling faces into the ranking better - make them a "star for a day"...

5. Improve the functionality of the team/university standings.
This section of the ranking/log has taken off!!! over the past year. We have literally hundres of clubs/teams/universities etc. listed. I've got to make this thing work better...
a. develop a classification system (university, club, virtual, etc)
b. make the club/university "searchable" (think drop down menu)
c. require an approval process to create a new team/club entry (gives us some control over team name)

then make the team standings page(s) filterable by:
a. "show only university"
b. "show only XX size teams"
c. "show only health club"
d. etc.

Make the pages "paged" to allow for better navigation.

Thoughts/comments additions?

-bp

I know the prevailing wisdom is that erging with slides is the sameas erging without, however competitions are all done on stationary ergs.

Is it possible to separate the rankings based on slides or stationary? Right now the only way to tell isto go into each ranked listing and look at the details.

grams

i'll check and see where this data lies in the ranking structure - it may be possible to have another drop down menu (like source) that allows for this...

-bill

QUOTE(grams @ Apr 11 2005, 10:24 AM)

I know the prevailing wisdom is that erging with slides is the sameas erging without, however competitions are all done on stationary ergs.

Is it possible to separate the rankings based on slides or stationary? Wow, Bill! A very ambitious agenda. I'd be very happy to see just the people finder but the training partner idea and your proposed improvements to the university/club standings all sound excellent.

My only additional suggestion would be a sortable field in the university standings that calculates meters/member.

Many thanks for all your work on the logbook and rankings. As I'm sure you know, the rankings are a great motivator for C2's current and future customers.

MM

P.S. Looked for you in San Diego - where were you?

QUOTE(c2bill @ Apr 11 2005, 10:45 AM)

Those of you who have been around for a while know that mud season here in Vermont can only mean one thing - the online ranking season is drawing to a close for the year.

Each season I've tried as hard as I can to improve the ranking/logs. I particularly like the "training partner" idea. I'd like to see this more generalized:
- ability to specify more than one partner.
- ability to "publish" your log so that *anyone* can view it.

And by the way, Bill, these rankings are real key to my motivation. I thank you, and so does my wife, who's been pawing over my new muscles

Dave
#1: Separating erg times from slide times is a good idea.

#2: I don't know much about the partners thing. Is there a "search for partner" function?

It would be nice to put in a few parameters for a search, to find training partners based on selectable parameters such as similar age, weight, gender, times, other sports, and general location etc.

Something like this would be useful.

#3: Include the sender's email address when sending email through the rankings.

Why can't we add the SPM for a ranked row?

one thing i would like to see is a column showing 500m pace. I am not so much interested in the principal page but for summary stats. I'd like to know my 500m pace for each week or month. Gives another way of measuring the intensity of a week's work.

Mud season has not been so bad. Lots of warmth and sun. Hard to row actually.

I don't know if this is a rowpro or C2 feature, but I would love an improvement in the ability to download rowpro files from the rankings. Currently, I have to click each link, add an email address, hit ok, etc. then import each single file into rowpro. So I would love a zip file or some sort of download of all rowpro entries for a distance or a month or something, or someway to check multiple boxes and import them all at once.

Make the FISA age groups the default.

For extra credit, have them apply to previous years.

Keep up the good work Bill as it is really appreciated.

A few things that I would find useful are:

1) Ability to click on a person in the rankings and to show a summary of all their ranked pieces.

2) A field to allow club selection in the rankings which would allow mini-leagues to be formed. At my gym we have about 20 people entering in the ranking and it would be nice to be able to select these people only and print out their times. At the moment we use the State field but it does not seem to work when being searched on. Maybe use the team/University standings field but allow it to used as selection criteria in the rankings ?

3) As above but to show the ranked workouts for each person in a club and the percentage in their age ranking. Basically the same view you get for "Ranked Workouts" but repeated for each person in the club specified.

Nigel.

Currently many RowPro rowers do not enter results in the RowPro rankings. If their non-RowPro time is better, then they can not enter a time in that category for others RowProers to chase. For example, a rower rows their best 2K of the year at CRASH-B. Then that rower can not submit a slower time that is rowed on RowPro for the RowPro files unless they delete their fastest time of the year.

I think it is important for all the rowers who use RowPro to be able to enter their best RowPro times. This shows how many people are using the software and gives everyone more downloadable files to race against.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

thanks folks - lots of good ideas.

The training partner is going to happen - i'm going to limit the total number of "partners" per person to 4 for starters. Pretty straight forward - you put the ID number of your partner into your profile, they put yours in theirs. Where a match occurs - a link will appear next to your partners ID# in your profile that will give access to a pop up window with their logbook (minus the edit/delete buttons).

you'll also get an email each time your partner enters a workout into the log.

The person search function will give access to all ranked pieces.

I'll add in the calculation for /500m times to the ranking profile pop up window.

-bill

Several features and/or bugs:

- 61 minute workouts display as 1 hour, 0 minutes, 60 seconds

- Challenges page appears to round when computing average daily meters, while the honor board truncates making the two numbers different by 1

- It would be nice to give the ordinal (place) ranking on the honor board like the world rankings page.
