Never apologize for sarcasm, it saves us from being patently insulting.

"We are here to share information, and accept other peoples points of views, even if we think they are crazy ones, if that is what they believe, then let them believe it." - Sir Pirate

I'm not sure anyone gives a rats arse if someone wants to believe "crazy ideas", I'm certain that I don't, however "accepting those crazy ideas" implies something different all together. Do you want this to be a place where anything, no matter how whacky, should be allowed to be posted without further discussion?

Bring on the typing Monkey's!

Shouldn't that be "Founts of knowledge"?

Well said Sir P.

Forums, by their very nature, get used and abused. Healthy discussion is one thing, abuse of fellow ergers (e.g. calling them liars in public) is another.

IMHO.....

My name is here, if you want to erg slower, follow MY advice.....

Alternatively, a font is a basin (e.g. for holding water, as in a church), so we may be bowls full of knowledge.

I know this, as I'm a font of all knowledge, naturally.

On the original subject, I agree with you Pirate. There are some particular people I could single out as seeming more interested in bickering and point-scoring over others, than in actually imparting useful knowledge. Discussion is one thing, but sometimes threads go beyond that, IMO.

Personally, I don't have a problem with a more knowledgeable person correcting someone with less experience, but often it seems that the way in which it's done on this board lacks, I don't know, class?

If someone posts something you know to be wrong, you have three options, as I see it. The first of course is to say nothing. That seems unlikely for some people on this board, so we'll skip that one. The other two might be something like: "No, you moron, that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard", and "I understand what you're trying to say, but here's why I think you're wrong". So often people seem to want to resort to the former. Can't quite figure out why.

becz,

I don't see very much name calling (your middle option), and mostly your third option seems to be the initial response to questionable information.

Unfortunately your first option is where many end up because those with "less experience" seem to go with the middle option when questioned, and the effort involved in responding to that sort of thing is rarely very rewarding, but often necessary.

So how do you characterize this response to your post?

Probably could have gone with option 1 but then we are back to a pretty boring and useless forum.
