I now how to push myself and have done it on many occasions during races. (road and long distance trail ones)
However I have never had to resort to such deperate thoughts as you suggest Jus. Perhaps I stay within my comfort zone, although it doesn't feel like it sometimes.

I really don't know how you can simulate what should be the most extreme physological pressure for what is in fact something relatively trivial and non-important. I suspect that, whilst you think you are reacting to self-induced stress, in reality you are only acheieving what other people do by just pushing themselves very hard.

I am not trying to belitle, detract or be deragotory but the kinda thoughts you use to stimulate yourself do not seem to be the way to go , for me at least.

if you were racing neck and neck with someone else would that not cause you to work as hard as your method. If so, then you are not really simulating your worst fears properly. The worst fears that cause a man to be able to lift a car when his child is trapped underneath etc etc

John

Edited because all context has been removed by Jus.

However, may as well provide a few things that relate to a good "mentality".

The only thing lost when you neglect fundamentals is the possibility of reaching your full potential. - Rich “Ranger” Cureton (2004)

Compete only against yourself, and eventually you may be your ONLY competition. - Paul Smith (1983)
I'd like to say I'm in the majority who enjoy picking on PaulS. It's just lately I don't get that same rush. And you know why? gorow9! She was like my kid sister. Perfect badger material. And now she's gone, gone, and I'm just empty... I'm thinking the mother hood superior finally got to her. Either that or she thinks I'm one of those sicko pervs who try to pick up young girls in chatrooms. gorow9, where are you????
