Today I met with two representatives from the Newton-Wellesley Hospital to discuss the possibility of having an erg marathon in their parking lot during the Boston Marathon foot race. They didn't see any problem with using their parking lot because the hospital is basically shut down during the race because Rt 16 (the main access) is closed during the foot race.

The Boston Erg Marathon would be located by the Rt 16 where the foot race will pass by. The ergs will face the road so that the rowers can watch the bewildered faces of the runners as they pass. If the erg marathon starts at the same time as the foot race, the erg marathon should be about half finished just when the leaders of the foot race are about half through. There should be a lot of empathy all around for sore muscles and lack of energy.

Newton-Wellesley Hospital would like to turn the erg marathon into some type of charity fund raiser - probably to raise money for cancer. More to follow later on this.

Concept has agreed to provide equipment for the race/challenge. (Just finishing a marathon is a good enough challenge for most people and shouldn't be discouraged just because some people like to do it as a race.) Last year, we had about 12 people that were interested in participating, but I hadn't figured out the logistics because I had just moved to the area. Now I have located and secured a perfect place to set up at the half way point in the foot race. I suspect we could have around 30 ergs going at once from forum members and more if we get some of the local rowing clubs interested.

Virtual marathon rowing came up in the discussions too. I will have to check with Concept and RowPro and see what can be done with connecting the rest of the world via the internet to the race in the parking lot. Currently there are many more people that have rowed in virtual erg marathons versus venue erg marathons.

Please comment and let me know if you are interested in participating in some way - setting up, support crew, or rowing.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Which brings us to the next logical question.
Of the concept 2 rowers, who has run Boston in what year and what was their time.

For me:
1984 2.34.40
Paul,

Definitely count me in as a rower and I may be able to help with setup etc. I may also be able to get my hands on some canopies if needed for protection from the elements. Last year I dd an online marathon while watching Boston on TV. This should be even more exciting.

Frank

For my online marathon last year we started at 16:30 GMT which coincided with the start of the elite women's race. I don't know what Paul has in mind for a start time.

Frank

I thought that we would start with the men's start at 10:00 EST and then we would be half way through when they are half way through. We would be finishing about half hour to an hour after the first runners cross the finish line. We could see this on a TV? About that time would be when thousands of runners would be passing in front of us at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
Unless you know something about the 2006 marathon that we don't.

Frank
Howdy!

I'd be interested in participating either online or in person (could drive down from Maine). If I'm able to get there in person I'd be happy to help with set up.

David

I am not sure of the start time. I will have to check on that when I have some time.

The media tends to cover different and crazy things. We will be set up right on the side line, directly in front of the Newton-Wellesley Hospital. By the halfway point in a several hour broadcast, the TV announcers are sure to be looking for something else to say other than who is leading the foot race and how they are looking. Air time is not for certain, but I suspect that there might be a few comments about us and a few seconds of footage.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Paul--

I would be interested. I'm on sabbatical; so I have no work conflicts.

I've been wanting to try a FM as a lwt. This might be a good opportunity.

I've never been to the Boston marathon, but I've run about 30 other marathons over the years.

Best time: 2:50

I can bring my own erg.

ranger

As I am the same age as you and depending on when you ran your marathons Ranger you would not have qualified to run Boston.

When I ran in 1984 the qualifying time was 2.50. I ran 2.34.40

I find it interesting that your best time was only 2.50.

Given your commitment and current training schedule I would have thought a 2.25 marathon for you.

Any reason your level of achievement was not as good comparitively to your erging.

Regards,
ChrisB
I certainly worked hard at it. I think that my build and weight was the main problem. In body build, I am much more of a swimmer and/or rower than a runner, and even so, more of a middle distance runner than a marathoner.

What was your height and weight when you ran your 2:34 marathon?

How do you do with this rowing thing? What is your 2K? What fast can you row a FM?

Yes, as I remember, I _did_ qualify for Boston with some of my runs, but for whatever reason, I never went. Life was busy; I was doing other things (career, family, etc.).

ranger
