Pretty much the usual for the high altitude folks. Best story by a country mile, Nelson Boyd. I have been competing every year for the last nine against Nelson. He is a great competitor and even a nicer guy. He is usually in the 7:10 to 7:30 range. Last year right after our race he was diagnosed with cancer. He had all the operations, spent 8 weeks at some high powered cancer clinic in Tennessee with heavy chemo, and was there today doing the half hour row and the 2k. Very quietly and with no fanfare he laid a sign down behind his erg, "Diagnosed with cancer Feb 2005, cancer free since Oct 2005", pulled well over 7000 for the half hour, then an hour later sat down on the erg next to mine for the 2k. Crazy bastard was well under 8:00. We hugged and yeah we cried a bit. And he was the first to tell me congrats, jeez what I did was squat, he was the man. Somehow the rest all seemed anticlimax. But for the number crunchers. Those who qualified. Karen Gress, 7:36 (or damned close to that), two University of Colorado rowers a hwt at 6:10 (whoa, at altitude) and a lwt at 6:35. And oh yeah I pulled a kiss you sister 6:51.8 (same time exactly as I did for the USIRT trials). dennis

Nice row, Dennis. You too, Karen, if you're reading this.

See you in Boston -- but only if you promise not to stay 'lightweight' on me AFTER the race

And thanks for reminding us that stories like Mr. Boyd's are what it's really all about.

I remember Nelson in the rankings a few years ago and he was always way ahead of me. I am glad he is recovering and doing well.

Doctors coerced, belittled, threatened me and said I'd be dead in 30 days unless I did all their surgery, chemo, radiation and all that other crap that they do and that I'd have a 50% chance to live 5 years if I did. I told them to SHOVE it and walked out.

I have no use for any of the greedy and ignorant medical quacks.

Hey, Nelson, keep getting better and all the best.

That is an extraordinarily ignorant and highly offensive statement (even by your prodigious standards), given how many lives have been saved and how many people who would have in past decades have no chance of recovery now have an excellent chance to make it.
My Dad is a healthy, active, cancer-free survivor of not one type of cancer (colon), but two types of cancer (lung as well). In both cases, he had competent, caring, involved and personable doctors, surgeons, and nurses. He had chemo once, and radiation once. He's been cancer free for more years now than I really want to count. He continues to get fabulous care.

I also must congratulate Dennis on a wonderful post ... and I agree with Nav ... it truly is what life is all about.

Congrats to all who rowed. I am in Colorado right now, and rowing at altitude is no simple matter.
