Erica Kinney F26L 13.35.7

A gut-wrenching but fun day. Full efforts all around, many by first-timers.

Under the watchful eyes of forumites Fred Dickie (Dickie) and Carla Stein (seat5) heats of 4 got underway at 9:00am. Dan Edson, his daughter Molly, and Ken Taylor kept things moving smoothly by checking people in, organizing the heats and writing down the results.

Several members of the nearby hardcore Nock's Gym came by and acquitted themselves well, then eagerly sought out tips for improving their technique and training methods and operation of different functions on the erg. They seemed psyched enough to be thinking for organizing a similar event at their gym next year. That is good. There are not enough events for racing fanatics.

Paul Flack repeated his 2004 fastest-time-of-the-day to win the PaulS Sledgehammer Award. Young Gina Paolino might have been inexperienced in racing but was strong enough to dominate the women and win the BridgeStreetToys Mini-Sledge (donated by Paul Flack & Family's new Toy Company) for the fastest female time of the day. Will Haskell set a new PB and nabbed the BridgeStreetToys Tackhammer for the fastest Lightweight time of the day.

As in 2004, division winners went home with "engraved" ice scrapers for their effors. Runners-up this year were awarded Marlinspike keychains that were generously donated by Jim Keating (7th) and his company.

After the main events a slide quintuple was set up, stoked by Paul Flack (Canoeist) and manned by FrankJ, Bayko, rickm, and Will. All five rowed portside, so they went full circle and finished exactly where they started. After a brief warmup to get the feel, a 500m was rowed that is an assumed world-record of 1:35.74 (individual times from 1:32.6 to 1:38.4 added together and divided by 5). A few people were also introduced to the Fish Game and thought that it was a hoot.

A good day.

Grand Poobah of the NE2KC

Hey Bayko,

I have a bunch of digital photos from today, do you want them posted?

Great job everyone that had the guts to race! It was really fun to meet everyone and see what it's like at one of these events. Maybe I'll dare do it next time around.

Rick,

Yvette and I want to thank you and your helpers for another great event. It would be a lot of fun if there were more events like this. Yvette already has her "trophy" hung up on the wall of our exercise room. Mine is in my car as I have a trophy wall in my cubical at work and now I will have crossed windshield scrapers.

This is what amateur erging is all about.

Frank

Rick, well done. Another stunner. I share the opinion that this is what erg racing can be. Fun and personal. I'm still thinking that you're prizes may make some of the entrants (PaulF) a professional. Cheers d. PS you got it squared away yet for the evening of the 25?

After all, next month is 300m month for the CTC.

Frank, it was great to have here you again, and to have Yvette join in.

Dennis, I have begun the softening process at home ("Gee, I wonder if...maybe...if AFTER work...I could drive back down to Boston....")

And Carla, I echo what Frank says. I'm so glad that you came yesterday and saw that there was not one discouraging word spoken the whole day. Nothing but support and encouragement for every one of the competitors. Nothing wrong with that picture at all--picture yourself there too.

Grand Poobah (of the NE2KC)
