His name came up in many conversations. I am not a fan but out of respect for Marilyn, who is (or was) a fan of Ranger and could not go to the BIRC, I was ready to film his race for her. I couldn't believe it when I saw his erg was empty to only find him sitting in the row behind me! I am like, "What the hell is going on?" And he had so many people encouraging him to just "jump over the wall and just get on the erg."

It has to be "stage fright". Or, maybe, the attention of not rowing was worth the trip for him. Ranger was honored in the official race prgramme as the recepient of the Millennium Cup (awarded to the rower over 50 whose does awesomely) and now with the published attention for all X-thousands of rowers to see, why race? Let's even be more popular by doing nothing.

If it is stage fright, perhaps Ranger is trying to re-invent himself to off set some personal embarrassment.

I would hope that he puts less time into thinking about this post than I spent writing this response.

Steve

I think this post is out of line, and I don't think there is any basis or grounds to challenge or insult Ranger about not racing at BIRC. That was entirely his decision, and as I understand it, he paid a lot of money to fly over and decide not to race. I would get out of the way if I was a 50s lightweight at the Crash-bs.

I still the best thread in the old forum was about Ranger's prerace warm up (hours of jumping rope in the middle of the night in a hotel) at his qualifying race I think in Elkhart Indiana. I can't search the old forum and find it. It was hard not to think he was crazy back then, but then 6 months or so later, he backed it up with a world record at the crash-bs. What else can you expect from a competitor?

I am going to take Roland's name out of the copied post so as not to volunteer someone into this poll.

There is no need to put your name in the post to vote. There has never been a requirement to put your name down in any poll.

Can't believe I'm actually responding to this but ...

Thomas, why didn't you ask Ranger in person, when he was sitting right behind you, why he chose not to race? I am not sure what you are trying to prove by questioning a person's integrity in a public forum, but it makes you look like the south end of a horse facing north, which you are probably not.

Regards
Mark

I heard it all to my surprise. It put some what a negative tone on the spirit of the BIRC. It was not very champion of Ranger to not get down there and race.

I remember I read how Eric Zarbel was racing Lance Armstrong in the early 90's and it would turn out Lance was going to beat Eric. So out of pure hate for Lance, Eric finished 4th so he would not have to stand on the podium with Lance. So, maybe Ranger felt he could not get 1st place and in so decided not to race at all to avoid having someone say they beat him however, without the emotional element being a factor.

Currently, Yes-5 and No-2.

Mark,

Someone asked him and he said he didn't want to race. He said more but I didn't pick up on it until I realized that it was Ranger and people were encouraging him to get down there. It was actually kind of funny. Of all the people to sit near me, it was him, and for all the people to sit near him, it was me. He actually sat one row behind me and about 6 or 7 seats to my right. I didn't hear to much other than that. I was conversing with the wife of a competitor who was sitting next to me. I think her husband had already raced and she was there to cheer on another wife's husband, who I think was a fireman and had raced at the World/Police Fire Games in Barcelona, Spain, who was in the same heat as Ranger but not necessarily in the same race (some of the heats had as many as 6 or so different race groups going at the same time).

Ranger was sweating profusely. He may have dehydrated himself to make weight. I heard from guys at the hotel the night before he was claiming to be a tad over the weight limit but he was not too concerned. He may have drained himself of the energy to do a decent 2k.

Ranger has no obligation to any one but himself, he does not represent a team, any organization and i'm assuming he does not have a sponsorship contract that has a competition clause. With this being said, if an individual in this situation decides that he is not, for what ever reason going to compete, then so be it.

GW

My original post to Ranger was done intentionally in a style that a TV sports reporter would, to extract his thoughts on an issue, that would not normally be forthcoming.

Unsurprisingly, Ranger replied in a way that most people in his position would, which was obviously not the response I was seeking. But it was worth a try.

Whether he likes it or not, Ranger is very much a high profile public figure, in our relatively small world of C2 ergers. Consequently, from time to time, he must expect this sort of thing to happen. However, being the champion that he is, he should be able to cope with it, otherwise he would not have achieved what he has to date.

Those of you that know me well are aware, that it would be out of character for me, to make personal attacks on anyone. That's why I have always avoided posts on this forum involving scathing attacks on other forum members.

Unfortunately for the subjects involved, human nature being what it is, enjoys a bit of controversy and fun.

Keep it smooth, keep it relaxed
Roland Baltutis ( That's my real name, I don't hide behind an alias)

Keep up the banter within the main threads.....but let's not start creating a popularity contest (i.e. a forum poll) to vent the frustrations.

Oh, and for the record, I was disappointed that ranger did not row the BIRC. However, surely there is now more anticipation for the forthcoming WIRC and the unveiling of the new ranger stroke (new ranger WR?) because of his earlier absence at the BIRC?

RichardT
