Throughout the year the forum is filled with such things as "I can do x:xx:xx for 5K, what can I expect to do in a 2K?" Or "I do 8 X 500m at an average of x:xx.x, what does that predict for a 2km?" Or even "I can do x,xxxm in 30:00 at a spm of 22 keeping my heartrate at 77.2% of my max as measured by the Karvonen method. What can I expect to race a 2km at?"

Well, now is the season to find out what we can do for 2km by actually racing 2km. But there is very little being posted. C'mon guys, this is supposed to be the peak of our season.

I'll start. Saturday at Hull, Massachusetts I went to the annual Crash-Bobs. I sat beside John Hart (40+ Hwt) and we wrenched our guts out. John did a bit of a fly & die with splits of roughly 1:39, 1:42, 1:42, 1:46 to finish in 6:50.3, while I still had four strokes to go. I was fairly even through most of it averaging around 1:44.4 to 1:44.5 and then managed of lame finishing kick to get 6:56.3. We were both well satisfied. There were no weight divisions, but we were both leading our age-groups when we headed home. John was actually more ambitious and also did the 5K about a half-hour later, recording a fine 18:07.

So, how did anyone else do? If you didn't compete, let us know the results of any forum people that you might have seen if you were a spectator.

Rick

Two MAD team rowers, John Davies and Wullie Brown, went off to a race in Germany at the weekend. Very high standard throughout from all accounts. Wullie won his race in I think about 6:46.

Lots of races coming up over the next few weeks. Next weekend is the Surrey IRC in London, followed by Manchester the following weekend, final race of the British GP series (some other race on in Boston that weekend I believe?). I'll only be racing in Manchester out of all of them.

Bakes, Gosh you just keep turning out those great times. Glad you're in the old 50's. I had a 3/4 of a good race at Mile High. Sat just where I wanted at 1:42-43, was feeeling good enough to think about moving up the sprint a bit, but then the wheels came off the last 400 or so. First time ever I went over 6:50 at Mile High
Not sure what went haywire, but it was enough to qualify, so see you in Bosotn. Oh by the way, I shouldn't have made light of your snow, I just came in from two hours of removing 15 inches from 50 yards of driveway. later d

No 2k news, but Paul Smith (and his 2x partner) and I (and my 2x partner) have a bit of sport going to get ready for Edmonton.

We're doing weekly on-water 500m pieces. So far (with 172 days left 'til the beginning of the games) my bow seat and I have had a 1:46.

The lake has been closed for the past few days, but we're hoping to get out again by this coming Sunday and give it another go.

Dwayne

Dwayne, I got word from Jim Willis that I'm going to ref at the desert sprints. Hope to get in a boat with Ted P at least once while there. As it gets closer I'll let you know what days I'm going to be around, maybe we can hook up for some grins in a quad or double. How are things looking for the Arizona erg race, isn't it the 5th? later d.

All I get from everyone down here are 'I-don't-knows'.

I'm assuming then that the regatta is actually going to take place. I haven't seen anything for registration, race info, nadda!! Any idea where all this can be found?

The AIRC will be going on this weekend. The only thing that I don't have confirmation of yet are the ergs (kinda need those to pull this off eh?). So the stress level is mounting. From what I'm hearing from the Junior coaches around here, there should be a good 100+ juniors. So I'm hoping with the rest of the field to get maybe 150 actually pulling.

Only one relay team confirmed so far though. I was hoping for more excitement from people on this one. I'd eventually like to see a Grand Prix series here in the States, and was hoping this would be a good stepping stone. Maybe once people actually see it, then it'll catch on.

Dwayne

Dwayne, I don't know where to find the info. What Willis told me was that the buoyed course was lost in the high water (don't know what that means) and that the racing was going to be Henley style, 1500 for everyone but masters who will be 1000. Floating starts. Finish at the usual place by the bridge. No schedule yet as I don't think they know for sure just what or how many they are looking at. Good luck on the ergs. I can't tell you how many times I have spent the night before the mile high sprints assembling ergs, not C2's fault, they were delivered in plenty of time, but the venue had no place to store them so they were in boxes outside till the night before. live strong d

Since NE2KC was cancelled, the local race info didn't get spread that way either.

John wrote to me and said there the big event was a 5K run after the 5K erg. I expected that to be right up your alley - owning a running shoe store and all that. I might even try it next year to motivate the college kids to beat the "old heavy dude".

I plan to bring my daughter to Brockton again this year. Hope to see you there.

Paul Flack

Thanks for the report Pete. Wullie seem to be on a roll, as I saw that he did a race venue PB at Glasgow last week and now this result. Good luck in Manchester.

Altitude Schmaltite Dennis. You rule even without oxygen. Look forward to Boston. No more snow please.

Good luck in the relay Dwayne. Have you thought about having the other guys start off with 15 stokes each and then having you finish the rest of it by yourself?

See you Brockton Paul. Rick Martin and I may be car pooling since I pass nearby him on Route 128. It will be interesting to see what a full year of maturing will do for Ruth's time.

Rick

There are lots of erg results posted on row2k now. I'd expect we'll see even more posted soon, since there were several C.R.A.S.H.-B. qualifying races this past weekend. Dennis, congratulations! Glad to hear you qualified again, even if you're not thrilled with your time! Mary, Grace, Helen, and I all plan to be there.
See you in Boston!
Joan

Joan, Great stuff. Looking forward to seeing all the California girls in Boston. I'm glad to see Steve Krum is still at it. He is a great guy and it was a bad deal when he had to move to California, but he seems to be thriving. Now if you can do what we couldn't and that is convince him to get in a boat. Put John on that task. Steve I think would enjoy the boats, he works so meticulously and hard at everything he takes on. dennis

Joan, Mary, Dennis, Rick, PaulS, Canoeist, Mike N., Mike C. and all you CRASH-Bers - All the best to you in BOS. I won't make it this year due to losing a month of training with a bad case of the flu. Slowly getting back on track but not yet up to speed for the big one. I'll be cheering you on from afar. Give 'em h***!
MM

I believe we retained our age group leads in the 2k as well as finishing 1 & 2 in the overall results. We were lucky that the 29 year old guy who only did the 5k (and posted a result of 17:07), did not enter the 2k! I forget the name of this young strong guy who seemed to be new to rowing, but he seemed like he could get a sub 6:25 2k without much trouble.

I will be skiing this Saturday and Sunday with wife and kids so I will miss the Brockton MA race.

John

The 5K would be a fun race for me to enter. We don't have many chances to row 5K head to head except on e-row or RowPro.

I rowed a 5K in 17:10 on January 29. It would have been fun sitting next to a youngster to see if I could drop a few more seconds.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
