Recently purchased a new Model C but haven't been on an erg since I rowed as an undergraduate in 1991. If I recall correctly the standard erg distance at the time was 2500 meters. Howevet looking around the forum it now appears that 2000 meters is the benchmark. Is 2000 meters the current standard?

Also, what are the definitions for the lightweight and heavyweight classes.

Thank you in advance.

David

You got it, the Race distance changed from 2500M to 2000M with the introduction of the PM2 in 1995, and the bonus is that it really is a shorter distance, thank goodness. However, if you were used to the PM1 and rowing faster than a 1:55, you are going to have to work a bit harder on the PM2 or PM3 for the same pace.

Welcome back to the fray.

Was there a difference in how the two calculated the distance? I guess there must be a non-obvious difference based on your "it really is a shorter distance" comment. Any insights?

I think it was simply because 2k is a standard for on-water rowing.

This is from the UK Concept 2 web site about the BIRC:

The event's original distance was 2,500 metres though it reverted to the Olympic rowing regatta distance of 2,000 metres in 1995 to reflect the fact that virtually all of the world's national rowing teams (and indeed some squads from other sports) were utilising the 2,000 metre distance on the Concept 2 Indoor Rower as part of their team testing and selection programmes.
