Just a curiousity question. Who's going to masters at Oak Ridge? I haven't looked at the registration for a couple of days and it was thin on Monday and tomorrow is the deadline for entries. I'm doing a couple of 8's, a couple of quads and two doubles. I'll be hanging around the Rocky Mountain tent, stop by and say hello. Bill if your reading, anyone from C2 going to be there? dennish

Robert and Mike, two things. One: Robert, Bill said he might find a use for the picture I sent this week. Probably to make some rude comment about lightweight rowers. and Mike, I'm rowing the 8's with the Shusters from Occoquan so no doubt we will be running into each other. I'm also betting that Mary P will be there, but haven't heard. later d

Dennis,

I don't think Mary will be there. Ted Kakas, whom I think you know, and I rowed with her and Joan V. in a mixed four last year in Sacramento (Gold!) and we tried to put the same boat together for this year but neither she nor Joan V. could make it - unless something has changed in the last month or so that I haven't heard about.

The difference between lwt and hwt is ~16s, on both water and erg.

Ralph--

Don't know about on the water, but on the erg, the best time/world record spread between 50s hwts and lwts is less than half that, 7.2 seconds (2:59.8 and 3:07). This spread might be narrowed quite a bit this next year, too. This fall, I think I will row close to 3:00 for 1K as a lightweight. (I have only recently learned how to row correctly!).

I suspect that the all-time/world record on water 1K times (for 50s lwts and hwts) are pretty close, too, much closer than 16 seconds.

ranger
I have only rowed 200K or so on the water. I suspect that I have done about 30000K on the erg!

My first goal on the water is to fashion a good stable stroke at low stroke rates (18-24 spm), so this is what I do most of the time in my scull.

I do some sprints sometimes, though, and the result is not bad at all. I can get up over 40 spm and below 1:50, so my basic speed seems to be fine, even at this point. 1:50 is comparable to something like 1:35 on the erg. As Ralph's posts indicate, on the water, the national hwt 50s 1K is usually won at about 1:53 pace or so.

Slocum again. On the erg, I am still trying to catch him in a marathon (he has rowed 2:32), although it seems I can beat him in a 2K (he rows a 2K in the middle 6:30s).

I don't know much about racing my scull yet. No rush.

ranger
