My suggestion is to have a section, thread, or whatever the proper terminology would be for on-the-water-rowing discussions. For example, I assume that people who row indoors and don't row on water wouldn't be interested in discussions about bladework.

Byron

Great idea, Byron!
My question:
Last week, for the first time in 30 years rowing, we made a workout pulling an empty can.
We made 20 k on the coxless pair with Polaco, 6 of them pulling the can. It has been one of the toughest OTW-workouts I remember, but I have some concerns regarding this technique.
The best thing for me was when we gotl the can back into the boat, and then rowed normally: it's like flying!
Anybody has experiences with this? What do you think about it??

It really takes a lot to move the boat and it slows down much faster between strokes. Got to be careful not to hurt your back, though - it's sort of like cranking up the damper on the erg to 10, or maybe worse.

At the end of practice you bring a couple boats together to remove the bungees, and it feels great just picking the boat up off the water, with so much less resistance than before - relatively at least...

In the chapter called Building Strength by McNeely, in the book Rowing Faster edited by Volker Nolte, he mentions "resisted rowing" via bungees or dragging a can or bucket.

Since the cold weather has arrived I've been using an open water boat instead of racing shell. For one thing, I'm less likely to flip. I don't think it would be much fun to do a capsize drill in cold weather and then try to row back to the dock. Also, it's more of a workout to row in the rec boat.

It reminds me of my younger days, when the cyclists would switch to heavy, fixed gear bikes for our winter riding. Getting back on a lightweight bike in the spring felt so good.

Byron

OUR NEW BOAT-HOUSE
Finnaly, we got it!
This weekend finally our new boathouse at the olympic channel was ready:
- Plenty more space
- Excellent conditions and instalations
Helps to see how much boats we have, and how hard it is to get 'em all over to the new location, although it's only a couple of hundred meters away!
Nevertheless, we had great fun this weekend after the normal workouts.
Here you have some pics:

That's part of the "old" boathouse after emptying it

And this ist the entrance of the new one. Nice, eh?

Excellent instalations

And the interior with some of our boats.

Nice Boathouse Ancho, where is it again in Spain.

I used bungees quite a bit. The can is a bit of a mess because it does not travel continously throught he water, going up and down all the time. I am sure my design of the can was very stoneaged.

Besided resistance, the bungees bring stability to the boat.

I also have done a bit of specific weight lifting in the boat, rowing 18 to 20 strokes per minute, flat out, for three minutes. It is important here especially to hinge from the hip joint and support the small of the back.
