Meter Question

FAQ
I was just wondering what would be a good goal for a beginning rower to meet as far as meters rowed per week? I will more than likely only be able to row 3 or maybe 5 days a week as I do not own my own machine and must go to a local gym. Thank you for your help in this matter, and I will look forward to your reply.<br /> - Corey

I've already done 63K for October.<br /><br />As a beginner, I rowed 477.8K for the whole season (April 2004 through to May 2005). That works out at 9.1K per week (averaged over three sessions). So far this season I've rowed 770.0K. I passed the first million on Sept 10th after 16.5months. I'll go through the second million before April 2006.<br /><br />All my metres are rowed at the local gym (I get a free 5K cycling warm-up and a 5K cool down getting to the gym).<br /><br />Tonight will be; cycle 5K, 2K w/u, 4*1K with 5:00rest, 2K cool down, shower and 5K home.

I am now up to 20-30K a week (3-4 sessions per week). When I started out I only did 3-4 sessions of 2k for the first week or two. After that I started doing 3k and 5k. After about 6-7 weeks I have just started doing one or two 10k a week. <br /><br />I guess your progression depends on how you feel. I think you should listen to your body no matter what anyone in this forum says. You can get sore in various places from rowing so don't overdo it. If your body says rest; take the day off. <br /><br />/Anna

I for one had a really hard time getting a feel for how I could progress without overdoing it. The simplicity of the exercise can be a little misleading in my opinion. I bought my erg in June 2004 and really begun to row in January 2005. <br /><br />I want to try to make over 4 million metres (hahahaha little mistake ) this year.<br /><br />I row a lot (not that much ) and I like it.<br /><br />But the most important thing is, as Anna said priviously, to listen to your body and take enough rests! <br /><br />Hennie

I would not base my workouts on meters. I would base them on time spent. The initial objective would be to get to 30 minutes of rowing. So you can start off at 10 minutes a row the first week then 15 minutes the second week, then 20 minutes then 30 minutes. Row as slow as you need to make the time goal. Once you make 30 minutes per row, you can then work on rowing faster and longer on diferent days. Some days faster and some days longer.<br /><br />Of course the times suggested are just suggestions. You can adjust to your reality.

I'd agree that the important thing at the beginning is to just get your butt on the rower, and not worry about metres as much as about time. Apart from that, would highly recommend keeping a log as it proves to be fantastic motivation.<br />My first couple of weeks I averaged 10k, then 20k, and now I'm about 50k a week.<br />GB
