There is no right answer to this. In general the absolute minimum you should exercise (rowing or otherwise) is 30 minutes, 3 times per week. More recent advice says that really be 30 minutes, 6-7 days per week. It is common for people to do 4-6 sessions per week and have fair success (though to be the very best generally takes a far greater commitment of course!) Others think it a quiet day if they only do 2-3 hours, though this level of effort is entirely optional!

As important as the amount you exercise is the amount you don't - you should limit yourself to no more than 2-3 hard sessions per week, and have at least 1-2 days where you do little or no rowing (but you can still go for a walk!)

Remember, rowing is only one form of exercise; you should always try to be physically active every day. Rowing is one way of achieving that, but not the only way.

Y'all scare me. I mean, I have maybe an hour a day TO exercise.

My current schedule (optimum):

Monday: 10K
Tuesday: 5K, some weights
Wednesday: 6K run
Thursday: 5K, some weights
Friday: 10K
Saturday: 6K run

In the winter, the running will be replaced by jumprope, punching bag, maybe yoga if I can overcome my crippling hatred of stretching.

I don't always live up to that schedule, either.

I don't know how you guys do these long rows, I have had my Concept 2 for a week now, and the maximum I have managed is 1/2 hour and I had to stop, not thru' exhaustion, but because I could'nt sit on it any longer!
You guys must have iron Butts!

Andy
You get used to it. I used to be screaming after 8k of a 10k row, and now the 10ks are no problem.

I couldn't imagine rowing more than a 10k when I started. The marathon is still a complete mystery for me, however.

For motorcycle riders, the Iron Butt club are the guys who do 1,000 mile days. I'm not quite sure where the cutoff would be for the erg.
