The Gamut erg is wholesome entertainment for the whole family, so long as your understanding of "wholesome" includes dry heaves. It is a large metal beast that simulates sweep rowing. It has a heavy flywheel mounted horizontally, and resistance is provided by friction against the flywheel which is increased by adding weights that hold a brake against the flywheel.

It does a very nice job approximating the acceleration of the stroke for sweep rowing, although it tends to be far to light at the finish. Unlike the Concept II, it's not a machine that (in my experience, at least) can be rowed casually; if the flywheel decelerates too much it takes a lot of force to get momentum again.

If you row sweep and have never tried one, give it a shot. They're very good machines.

Have fun!
