hi all -- i am a newbie here. i hail from a rowing family and we just got our model D rower in january. i use it 3-5x weekly and love it. i have a question, but a smidge of background: i am a married mother of 3 kids ages 2, 5 and almost 8. considering all this, i make smoothies as a quick meal. lately i have added "Body Fortress Whey Protein" powder to my smoothies and have noticed soon after some intense gastric discomfort. after thinking i had a virus of some sort, i put the two together today. the container says to consult a MD if that effect were to occur, and i will when the MD office opens. but in the meantime, has anyone else had this happen? most content on the web says that whey is the easiest digestible form of protein, so i am befuddled. many thanks for your replies.

some people have whey intolerances aside from lactose intolerance. Some people even suggest that those who can take whey rotate it with other forms of protein powder to prevent the build-up of an intolerance.

Other times, the powder is just crap. Go figure. I don't expect a slice of white wonderbread to provide what a slice of organic whole wheat bread.
Poor quality protein powders are known to sit in your gut and cause gastro problems as they are not readily absorbed as others. These are the ones most likely found down at you local supermarket. If you want the good stuff generally you need to go to a specialist sports supplement store and pay a bit more for it.

As an experiment mix your supplement just with water in a shaker and see how easily it disolves. Look in the bottom of the container and see how much sedament is left. The good stuff should completely disolve with no gunk at the bottom.

Rockin Roland
Whey is what's left over after making cheese or butter and contains not much more than albumin. It's what we feed to pigs to make ham. Surely it'll be better to drink the milk itself, at least you get the minerals, other proteins, fats, milk sugar too; or eat ricotta or eggs?

Here's the best place to buy protein or any sports drinks IMO.

www.proteinfactory.com

If you want to relieve the gas problems buy one of their high quality proteins. I get the the ISO-Whey, is easier on the stomach but still tastes good. They also sell the cheap Whey you are using now......

Go into the Labratory and mix up wahtever you want, i mix a 50% ISO-Whey with 50% malotdextrin sweetened with Stevia/Vanilla. Put this mix in Soy milk and its taste like a milk shake but is very healthy......overall the powder helped my recovery greatly. It took a few weeks to feel the benefits though.......

Really high quality stuff. 50% maltodextrin AND stevia?? - damn you like your smoothies SWEET!!

I would personally recommend - a 50% - 60% milk casein blend and 40% whey isolate, vanilla flavor with the stevia or splenda sweetener. Any extra sweetness can come from natural juices or fruit

or...

use Biotest's Metabolic Drive powder (Vanilla Flavor) which is basically the same thing. you can get it here http://www.t-nation.com/category.jsp?ca ... o=1

FYI: Most of the whey protein out there is utter garbage. You truly get what you pay for. The good stuff is a bit more expensive. Those 5lb. tubs you can get at Wal-Mart/GNC for 20 bucks are an absolute abomination - it's worse than low grade protein - I can understand why that stuff did a number on your stomach!

Experiment with the good stuff and see if you still have the same issues.

D
