Thought I would offer my recipe for oatmeal muffins, having made a large batch this morning. These are with rolled oats - not the wretched 1 minute variety.

Oven to 425 deg F.
For 6 muffins

Wet ingredients: blend thoroughly
0.5 cup lowfat milk
2 eggwhites
1 tablespoon oil
1 tablespoon honey
wet options (banana, blueberries, etc.)

Dry ingredients:
1.25 cup rolled oats
1.25 teaspoon baking powder
dry options (chopped nuts, resins, etc.)

Lube muffin tin with (e.g.) Pam. Mix wet into dry ingredients, Stir briefly. (Yes, it looks soupy, but it works.) Ladle into muffin tin. Bake 15-17 minutes @425 deg F.

When done, remove muffins from tin for cooling.

These oatmeal bullets freeze will in plastic bags. Remove frozen muffin from bag, reheat 1 minute in microwave; eat. Wait 15 minutes. Row 6-8K.

-shu

but don't overdo it...

one of the first patients i ever saw on my first surgery rotation as a medical student was an older guy with a small intestinal obstruction, due to a gigantic oat bran bezoar. he had been eating 8-10 oat bran muffins/day in an attempt to lower his cholesterol!!

everything in moderation

andrew

Why the blazes would you cut someone open, when you could have just given them a drink of water or an enema.

Oh yes that's right....... money, greed, power, corruption.... not caring for fellow human beings and all.

'Tis the time of year to be jolly.... Oatmeal made with rolled oats would have been the better choice for lowering cholesterol. Consuming oat muffins for the "cholesterol lowering" effect is a little like eating a big Hershey bar for the antioxidants. The refined sugar and highlyt refined flour, in addition to the eggs, milk and oil that are typically added to these muffins are the items that may contribute to intestinal blockage, but certainly not the high fiber oats.

in general you are entirely correct, except when people completely overdo it on fiber. very coarse fiber or very large quantities of somewhat less coarse fiber is a very well recognized cause of intestinal obstruction. pumpkin seeds, taken in large quantities around halloween are another old favorite. some of it may also reflect what your bowel is habituated to- if you routinely eats lots of fiber, vs taking up a crash program of oat bran consumption.

af

There's an idea worth exploring. On the other hand, maybe a brain enema would do the job.

Anyone who avoids porridge because of the gooey, cement-like texture and lack of flavour needs to try the large flake oats.

bring 1 cup milk and 1 cup water to boil
add 1 cup large flake oats, then
reduce heat and simmer to desired consistency, stirring occasionally

total prep time is about ten minutes, add a small handful of raisins for extra flavour about half-way through simmering.
My every day breakfast is a mixture of whoel; oats, wheat bran, flax, dried cranberries, and chopped walnuts. 1/2 cup in a bowl + 1 cup water, 4 minutes in the microwave on high. Very nutritious and could not be easier.

john

Mark -

Wife and I share a bowl of oatmeal each evening just before bed. Common counsel for weight control is get yr eating done well before bed-time, but I have always slept better after a bit of food.

One evening a few months ago wife was having trouble sleeping. I offered to fix a bowl of oatmeal. Wife reported she slept better than in months, the cereal seeming to soak up excess acid in her stomach. A tradition was born.

We usually make this toward the fluid (vice gummy) end of the spectrum. No sugar, but maybe an apple or banana cut in after cooking.

-shu
