Knee Soreness

Should i continue rowing with a sore knee (runners knee)? any advice on how to improve this condition much appreciated.

Hi<br />Does your knee hurt more when you row?<br />If the answer is "yes" than don't use that knee when you row. If you use slides, it is easy not to use the soar joint. Just set the soar leg on the ground keeping the position steady and just row with one leg. If you need clarification let me know.<br />At the Iron Oarsman we a a few people with fragil knees. One of the guys at our rowing gym uses a bunji cord wrapped around the seat slide to limit the amount of travel his knees have. He was for a long time an avid runner and suffers from "runner knee" too. The limited travel seems to work very well for him. Hope this Helps.

John,<br /><br />After about 30 years of running I had to give it up about 2.5 years ago because my right knee would give me quite a bit of pain if my foot plant was only slightly off. Since then I have been rowing and haven't had any problems since. A couple times I thought maybe I could try running again but I ended up hurting my knee easily.<br /><br />The simple answer for me is that I can push as hard as I want rowing without hurting my knees. Seems it is the pounding from running that does them in. Rowing just doesn't put that kind of stress on the knees.<br /><br />Hope it works as well for you.<br /><br />Frank

Hi, perhaps isolating the problem might be the best place to start - 'runners knee' covers a host of possible sins. Have someone test the structures to what it is eg IT band tendonitis, chondromalacia patellae, meniscus etc - each one treatable. Without knowing the condition you may be stuck with only trial and error

Do you think you are sore because of a lack of lateral knee stability? If that were the case you could use a knee brace. Take your time and do not force anything. Wanted to bump this thread back up as I find myself with a similar knee complaint to John's. I get a sharp pain down the outside of my left kneecap right at the start of the drive if I push hard off the footplate. Almost like a jolt of electricity, which makes me think it may be of nerve origin. This doesn't manifest much at power levels below 10SPI or so, but as soon as I try to put the hammer down -- twang, ouch, f*ck! It's also only felt on the erg. Walking and even running are fine. I've been icing the knee and have taken sveral weeks off training in the hope it would resolve itself, to no avail. Was thinking of trying a compression bandage as a next step. Any thoughts, anyone?

Have now been to see the physio therapist and it appears that i had damaged the meniscus on the right hand side, i have now been following a exercise plan which develops the muscles on the left hand side to support the knee whilst it repairs.
