Bursitis?

...of sheer grossness from my knee this afternoon.

About a week ago, I got kind of a bump on my knee; over the next few days it grew to the size of a golf ball, kinda off the side and down a bit. Some friends who are into sports therapy badgered me into going to the clinic, where the doctor said it was a bursa (bourse in French) and basically sucked a half a cup of ... stuff ... out of there with a horse syringe.

He said I need to lay off the rower, cycling, and all other knee-bendy exercises for about a week.

I'm lucky in that this wasn't painful at all, but is this a warning sign? Is there any correlation between erg use and bursitis to date?

Do you think you can get it in the other knee? If not... buy a slide and start rowing with one leg while the injured leg rests on the ground.
In the book Rowing Faster I remember there is a couple paragraphs written about bursitis.
Did you get a steroid or cortison injection?
All the best,
XENO

Thanks for the link, ulu! It set my mind at ease a bit.

And thanks for your concern, Xeno -- this is a one-time thing for now (no history of bursitis); I haven't looked into therapy or anythign as elaborate as injections for sure, but I just wanted to know if in general this is something a lot of rowers get. So far, it doesn't look like it.

I haven't had the extreme swelling, but once in a while one of my knees will get sore, especially if I do a lot of erging. As soon as I notice any soreness, I just erg with half slide or 3/4 slide instead of full slide. That works for me, but as I said I don't get swelling, just soreness.

The 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 slides are demonstrated on Xeno's DVD's. There are other workouts you can do: arms and upper body only and the upper body workout including biceps, triceps, and other strength and flexibility exercises also demonstrated in Xeno's DVD's that you can do without moving your legs.

I hope your knee gets better soon, and when you're ready to resume rowing, you might want to row just at half slide at first and see how that goes.

Byron

Hmm. The darned thing has just grown back, as the doc said it might.

This is really frustrating. I miss erging and running, but for obvious reasons I'm afraid to do it while I have this golf ball growing out of my knee.

So it's a medical name for "Housemaid's Knee".
