I would agree with RichardT regarding moderation, except that you said you've made a pact with your crew not to drink at all. Therefore the question is academic, because you're not going to take a drink.

But, since you asked...alcohol:
- Contains 7 calories per gram
- Has no nutritional value whatsoever
- Is burned off before fat and even before carbohydrates
- Impairs judgement
- Damages the liver
- Causes hangovers when taken in excess
- Causes sluggishness & lethargy when taken in moderation
- Decreases your control over how much food you eat
- Costs a lot of money that could much better be spent on real food

Ask yourself whether it should be on the dietary plan of any serious athlete!

One caution on your 'pact'; you don't want to be the only one found out to be drinking if performance is not spot on.

Alrite,
This is a fairly interesting topic and has been subject to many a heated debate amongst my crew.I believe that even two beers (happened last nite) can have a drastic effect on your training the next day (Happened today) especially if your training more than once a day. However I'dont think that any amount of beer will physicaly take your fittness away, what it will do will hinder your abilty to train which in turn will take away from your fittness.

Anto

If it's that weak Yanky beer then a couple won't hurt. As long as your not rowing as a lightweight. If it's that warm pommy muck then it is more likely to make you throw up before it affects your fitness. And if it's a full strength Aussie beer.....you'll be shooting your mouth off before the row then be forced to give out humble pie afterwards.

Sometimes on a Friday I have a couple of beers with my workmates at lunchtime then do a 2K time trial on the erg when I get home. I found that it makes little difference to my performance on the erg, just the occasional burp during the session is annoying.

You need to balance your workouts with social activities. Otherwise if your a slave to your erg doing ergs everyday you become a bore to your peer group and worst still considered odd to them. Just refrain from drinking before major rowing events and keep it in moderation at other times and you'll be right.

Keep it smooth, keep it relaxed
Roland Baltutis
