*sigh* What can I say? I'm getting old, and - like half the population - the word 'hemorrhoid' now has a special meaning to me. The old forums don't seem to be available for search at the moment, so I'm making this post in chagrin.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Should I refrain from rowing? Did someone mention a bicycle seat available at REI(?)?

For now I've been taking extra days off. (With the added stress of slipping from my honour board goals.) And I've been taking a hottish bath after each session.

-- tim
(posting like a fundamentalist...)

Try changing the height of your feet. Also, try sitting farther forwards or backwards on the seat to find the most comfortable position. I had the same problem about a year ago, but didn't find that I had to stop rowing.

Paul Flack

Suggestions:

Keep your weight farther forward, as regards balance between your feet and your butt. Rowing faster paces with the rate up and without straps helps to get used to this. Rotate from your hips going foward, rather than sliding as far forward with your butt.

Take short breaks if/when you get tired, to allow your muscles to recover.

Change your diet to something that's more agreeable with your system.

Tim , you have my sincere sympathises, I know what pain you have gone/go through. There is an application that takes the pain away almost immediately, your doc will know of it. once the pain has gone continue erging. And as you already know be careful on the diet front

You might want to try one a Skwoosh gel seat pad. I sometimes use it on the erg for long rows, and I use this seat kayaking. Here is a link:

http://www.oceanpaddlesports.com/accessories.html

Shalom!

In Alaska, they call 'em "Polaroids" (but not at all picturesque).

Anyway, what I found is that a medium-sized piece of bubble-wrap, folded in half and placed on the seat (the ergs, not mine), worked fine. And you can find bubble-wrap with small-, medium-, or large-sized bubbles.

It also helps to add fiber to your diet... lots of fiber... especially oatbran and wheatbran (soluble and insoluble fiber, respectively). One of my ex-wives used to say that I'm the kinda guy who eats bran while "sitting on the throne". I told her she was full of it.

What has helped me is Fiber Choice daily fiber supplement. This is a chewable orange flavored tablet. Normal dosage is two a day, however I just take one before bedtime and it works very well. Have you tried a touch of petroleum jelly digitally applied to the affected area. Also Neosporin helps with the healing.

Paul S - Newbie
