First Annual 'women's Forum Charity Row'
Women's Forum
Dear C2 Rowers (this is open to ANYBODY who would like to participate),

I assume that when most of us sit down to row, we have a strictly personal goal in mind: general fitness, weight loss, cross-training, training for competition, impressive meter accumulation, etc.

For one week a year, let's change the focus. Let's take a week out of our rowing schedules and dedicate our efforts to charity. Initially I thought it would be appropriate to row for your favorite women-centered charity. But considering that the United States is in the midst of coping with the aftermath of an extraordinary natural disaster, let's row this 'first annual' to support those organizations which are supporting the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

So here's what you do...

1) Reserve the week of Sunday, Sept 11th through Saturday, Sept 17th.

2) Select a charitable organization that is providing support for victims of the hurricane. (It might be your local place of worship. It might be the International Committee of the Red Cross.)

3) Set a goal. 'I will donate ___ dollars, pounds, euros, pesos, yen, dinars, etc. per ___ meter/KM rowed between Sept 11 and Sept 17.' (Make it interesting. Ask your family, friends, work-mates to support your efforts...)

4) Row your heart out. (Figuratively only, please!)

5) Write the check.

6) Sit back and feel a little better that your rowing efforts just made a little bit of difference in the world.

7) Let us know that you joined in, who you rowed for, and any other details that you'd like to share.

Thanks, in advance.
Deb

This is the week!

Open up your heart, set the goal, then row, row, row for your favorite Katrina-relief charity.

My goal is $1 for each 1,000m, and am aiming for at least 75,000m.

I hope you'll join me, and please share your results on this thread.

Make this the week that your meters REALLY make a difference!

Deb

Hey, Deb!

Great idea, but this has been one of my absolutely crazy weeks!

But to be in the spirit of things, I donated some stuff...okay, LOTS of stuff...for a garage sale that our local "no-kill" pet shelter is having to generate some startup funds. And it was decent stuff, not "junque." And now I'll also be working at the sale as well. So if nothing else, I'll get a workout hauling this stuff out to my pickup and then to the sale storage site.

Usually at the first of each year, I pick two organizations for a donation, after I've researched them carefully. I make a substantial donation to those places, then back off anything else that comes my way during the year, otherwise I wouldn't be able to keep track of who I give what to! That's one of the hazards of having ADD. And this way, I'm making donations to charities that I feel will give me the most bang for my buck, so to speak.

So maybe I didn't quite do the dollars-per-meter thing, but it still worked! And I'm hoping it was a win-win situation--they get some bucks outta my stuff, and I have more room. Probably to buy more stuff.

Thanks for being a caring person!

--Jen

That sounds like a fine idea; I'll commit myself to doing the same $1/1km or $100, whichever is more. Rowing seems like a particularly appropriate activity given the large amounts of water still covering New Orleans and elsewhere on the Gulf coast!

Just because the week has already started doesn't mean others can't jump in on this project - there's plenty of room!

Bill
Great idea! I wish I had seen this before Sunday! But it's never too late to give. I'm in.
Last year for the Holiday Challenge I donated $1 to my favorite charity for every 10k I rowed. You reminded me, I meant to keep this up and have a backlog to donate.

Margaret
