I know that several of you are active in other ways than the rower....we have some kayakers and i think some of you lift weights too. Thought we could have a cross training thread for those that want to talk about their other activities or workouts.

I like to run (am VERY slow), but find I don't do it much if at all during the winter....too dark by the time I get off work. Can't wait til spring to start up again.

Next?

I enjoy kayaking, but it isn't particularly aerobic for me most of the time, at least not with the same intensity that rowing is for me. I also enjoy hiking. When I am at the gym, I will sometimes run on the elliptical for cardio instead of row, and I plan to start a jump roping routine for cardio cross training in the next few weeks.

I do strength training, but consider that something fundamental to my fitness routine in it's own right, and not cross training (aerobic). However, I have experimented from time to time with fast paced circuits.

I ride my bike frequently and lately I've been learning how to run... I started running a mile or two ever time I go to the Y last week. Today I ran a 8.58 mile and slowed down to 24min for two miles. I also kayak in the summer and I ride horses.

I don't know if the usual strenght training counts- Y equipment weights in house and non-equipment exercises- abs, pushups, squats ect.

~Sara~

During the spring and summer months, my husband and I like to hike the trails at Rocky Mountain National Park. We live close enough that we can go for day hikes at least once a week (if my work schedule permits).

The weather in Boulder has been so nice lately, we may even take advantage of my "rest day" and go on a short hike at one of the foothill trails here in Boulder today.

We also do quite a bit of walking and bike riding when weather permits. There are a few lakes within walking distance and paths that run along a creek that we just love. We are very fortunate to live in such a beautiful area.

We also have a boat up in the lake district where we stay and do a lot of walking with the pups .(not really pups Ted and Boo two german shepherds age 9 and 8 respectively).

This year I have half promised to enter a triathlon as part of a team so going to have hit the pool again... as I have volunteered to do the swim .. I use to swim and played water polo for 10yrs but that is now over 10yrs ago and I am embarrassed to say I dont think I have been near a pool for 18 mths and that was on holiday!!!! The swim is also in open water in one of the lakes ... god I am loop de loop.......ggggg

Ok, to dig up a dead thread today.....

I went to the gym with my best friend yesterday. I can't afford to join, but she wanted company for the visit and I could go for free at first. Anyway, she got them to guarantee that I could cancel my membership when I move (1.5-2 months) and agreed to pay if i would accompany her to the gym until then to keep her motivated. Was great fun last night, and a nice gym. Can't wait to go back tonight. Was good to try some other activities to round out the workout, ya know?

Hmmmm - I'm feeling chatty today, so I will tell you what I do for weight training.
Since my main focus over the last couple of months has been the marathon training, I am doing a modified workout at the gym. I only have to go twice a week for now.
Basically, each body part gets two exercises, two sets of twelve - with a couple of exceptions. Here's a sample:
Bicep curls - 30 lbs, 40 lbs
Tricep rope - 50 lbs, 60 lbs
Tricep dips (assisted) - with the little thingy set on 7, then 6
Back row - 75 lbs x 2
Pull ups (assisted) - little thingy set on 8, then 7 (Don't you love my technical terms?)
Chest press - 50 lbs x 2, sometimes 55
Incline press - 45 lbs x 2
Overhead press - 50 lbs x 2
Lateral raises - set on 4 x 2
Calf raises - set on 4 x 2
Leg curls - 55 lbs, 65 lbs
Inies and outies (more technical terms!) 75 lbs, 20 reps x 1 (Abd, Add)
Smith press thingy - little weights for now - single leg and double squats
I'm not allowed to do leg extensions, because I don't have any cartilage left in my right knee.
I think that's it! I'm sure that I'm leaving something out, but I guess it will come to me when I'm at the gym tonight.
Now - when all this is done, I get to do 45 minutes of aerobics on the machine of my choice. (Not the rower, though)
Okay, I'm already tired! Do you think Helga will kill me if I skip tonight?

Enough from the Buffle!
Hey Carole!

Haven't seen you on for a while. How is the leg?????

I used to swim a lot, too, before I had my rower. I swam a mile a day, sometimes more. But all crawl, so after many years I wore out my shoulders and quit. It's been a really long time since I 've been actually submerged! Let's see, inhale when your face is out, exhale when it's in.....

Buffle,

Now you've got me wondering about those leg extensions! I've recently started back at the gym and the trainer set up a workout for me ( i would share it with you, but haven't been enough times to memorize it...he still walks me through it every visit) to do for the weights. Anyway, the first time that I did those I heard my knees crackling quite a bit. He laughed and said it was fine, but honestly its not the most comfortable excercise for me. It doesn't hurt at all, but the pressure on my knees feels like it could be bad, if that makes any sense?!

Anyway, starting to feel better from the bronchitis thing. Planning on a slow erg tonight, not sure how long or hard, first one back. If that goes well then I plan to hit the gym Saturday or Sunday, and maybe even do a little run/job on Saturday if the weather is ok. Am going to try cross training a bit more to see if it will help me keep dropping some weight.

Hi Snappy!
Leg extensions should be okay if you don't have any knee problems. I really wish I could do them. I'm certainly not qualified to give you an official answer to the question, but considering your age and fitness level, you should be all right. I'm not sure why I can't do them considering how much weight I use to do the curls. However, both my orthopod and my trainer said not to do extensions because of the lack of cartilage in the right knee. Go figure!
Good luck in the weight room! It really has helped me tremendously.
Buffle

Hello everybody,

First time in the women's forum. Glad to see that women are just as athletic and strong as men are!! I went to my dreaded swim practice tonight. You won't believe how many ways a person can do the freestyle incorrectly. Jane

Will be kayaking in a small lake once the weather warms a little more (springtime in New England requires patience).

Am also FINALLY over a terrible cold, which was followed by a business trip to NYC, which was followed by a colonoscopy--don't envy me too much, please.

As a result, I got on my erg yesterday for the first time in two weeks, and it was an unmitigated SLOG.

(It will get better, right?)

Now, now Avid Napper - don't be so hard on yourself! Of course it will get better with time.
Speaking from experience, both of those things will knock the stuffing out of you! Just give it a little time. You'll be back up to par in no time!
As far as the knee thing goes, I would be very cautious about the weights. I'm going to need a knee replacement one of these days, but at least the rowing, weight loss, and general improved fitness have put it on hold for quite a while. Just use your common sense and you'll be okay.

Later,
The Buffle
