Hi,

I was just wondering about taking days off from rowing. I have read that it is important that we take one day a week off, but is it really necessary? Would a shorter workout instead of a day off be okay?

Thanks!

I believe rest days are important, and contribute to good health and improved performance. I take 1-2 per week and occ. take a whole week off if I am injured or suffering the effects of over-training.

Thanks pamcnm. I guess I will just keep forcing myself to take a day off every week.

I try to take one day off a week from erging ...but I then tend to find something else to do like taking the dog for a long walk .

I row 4 or 5 times a week, usually 10--12K per workout. Since I usually don't get to work out until around midnight except on Saturdays, and still have to get up at 7, I just can't do 6 or 7 days a week. I did it during the Holiday Challenge, but more of those rows were "junk meters" than I would have liked, and boy was I dragged out!

It's really good to have at least one day off a week, oryou get stale or injured.
Yes you need to take regular days off. While it's important to stay in good shape for your man, you also need to make sure you have sufficient time to cook, clean, and take proper care of him and his needs.

Hi Kathi,

Nice ducks.

It's important to recover. How you do this is personal preference.

I do two workouts a week and tend to not take any days off, but have plenty of easier recovery days.

How long is really down to your physiology. Monitoring your HR in the morning is a good way to do this. If it is elevated from your norm, then you need to take more time off or reduce the load.

I take 1 day a week off (Friday) for R & R. This seems to suit me. I also don't push hard in every workout. 2 hard, 1 easy.

Everybody is different and you just have to find what works best for you. It took me awhile to work this out.

Good Luck !
Where's the fun in that?

Most of the time the athletes I coach take one day off a week. Occasionally, it's one day every second week. However, if you set up a training program correctly with the proper amount of recovery (easy) days you can go for quite some time without taking a day off completely if you wanted to do so.

I like regularly scheduled days off more so because I find they rejuvenate you mentally perhaps even more so than physically.

If a man may comment in the Women's Forum:

If you are not training for the Olympics or such you should take a day off at least twice weekly. The reason for this is that you make your training progress during the recovery days as your body heals the injuries (yes you injure yourself with a hard workout) and prepares itself for expected higher stress levels which you give it by increasing workout duration or intensity.

The older you get the more often you need a rest day, as your body heals more slowly with age

Hard workouts without rest days result in stress injuries due to overuse and a weakening of the immune system (which is why professional atheletes are always coming down with mysterious virus infections, etc.)
Thanks Bob,

I have been taking one day off every week now. If I keep rowing the longer rows every day I will start taking two days off. I appreciate your input.
