Was thinking it would be fun to get some handicap races on RowPro organized to help enlarge the community of online racers. I posted a handicap 10k for this Saturday (tomorrow 9/10) at 2 pm EST (1800 GMT, I think).

For those of you who are new to HC races.... Pace doesn't matter. You email me (ecp8422yahoo.com) your SB time for the distance (10k) and I calculate wait times. Slowest goes first. Fastest last. Assuming we all do our SB then we all end at the same time.

I'm also happy to change the distance if there is more interest in a shorter distance...say 5 or 6k. Just post your thoughts here.

Perhaps we could get a regular Saturday series going....Would be fun.

Best, Ernie

Ernie,

I enjoyed our last Handicap race and would like to see more, too. I won't be able to do the 10k on Saturday at 1800hrs because my babe can't go over 40 min without my attention at that time of day. But I will definitely watch for shorter HC races and/or any that take place at times of day/night when my baby will be sleeping. And my SB's are getting more accurate now that I have raced a few, so it should make for a better finish.

- Krysta

Ernie,

While I won't be able to make this weekend or next weekend either I am definitely interested in some type of fall series. The one concern that I have is that if we make it a purely handicap series I will not be able to get any of my races verified. I've gone over this with Bill Patton and he does not want to manipulate the time after the verification code has been applied. He makes a good point. The PM3 verifies a certain time and we shouldn't have to adjust it.

The simple fact is that now that I'm 60 most of my races will need to be verified to get a ranking position. Therefore I would like at least some races to be non-handicap so I can get a verified time. Perhaps we could alternate handicap and non-handicap weekends or maybe handicap on Saturday and non-handicap on Sunday.

One thing I liked about our summer series is that we did 5K, 6K and 10K races. Someone suggested something like the Supercanoa Le Tour series. Then the question is how do we score the races? You all can figure this out while I'm traveling next week so I can look forward to coming back to a new series all planned out.

Frank

Well I will give the 6k a shot. My new SB is 25:11.7, but I'd like to go with 25:00, if you don't mind, to give me something better to aim for.

Great racing today. Doug held tough with his lead and notched his first win. Next race is going to be tough for him with his new SB....No more sandbagging from my little brother.

Finishing Positions (for rowers entering SB times for handicaps)

1st place: Doug
2nd place: Ernie
3rd place: Krysta

Net Times

Doug: 25:09.2 (SB)
Krysta: 24:56.2 (SB)
Ernie: 22:04.8 (SB)
Tim: 24:32.9
Leif: 24:56

Special Guts Award - Krysta - for entering a handicap time of 25:00 even when her previous season best was 25:11. Bravo !

Great row everyone! Thanks for joining in.

ps. Rowpro didn't save the results so let me know if you see any errors.

Yeah, I definitely had an unfair advantage with that SB. It's gonna be hard next time now that my SB is real.

Are we doing another on Saturday? If so, I vote for something earlier or later -- middle of day is tough.

This is a great idea, so please keep scheduling them. The timing of morning through afternoon EST works for me. Doesn't matter if there is any score, or plan, either, although I would participate in a formal fall race series as well. Not sure if I can row this Sunday, but will figure that out by tomorrow. I am not going to come close to my PB/SB of 18:40, but that would be my handicap if I enter.

I think we should do some straight up online races too (although I think C2 still needs to change their ranking rules and find the whole verification process problematic). If and when we get large fields, which I think will happen fast, then we can also split up and FrankJ (or anyone else with a chance for a verified top ranking) could lead off a field so they can get a verified result.

As far as I know, there has never been a serious 500 or 1000 race online with RP. I am fine with generally going the middle distances, but I think it would be fun to race those too once in a while.

I can't really set PBs each week; it is too mentally and physically hard. So I would also like to try "place your bets" handicaps, in which we just picked a target time to hit (which could be faster than your PB like what Krysta did, or I did in the summer series; or slower), and the rule is you need to stick to that pace until the last 1000, when "all bets are off" and you could go as fast as you want.

We have had 1K races with RowPro before. They were fairly serious, and hurt too!

We have also had a series of 1K heats with 15 minutes rest. They were fairly brutal.

Put it on the schedule board and someone will show.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Hello,

Not sure about this - however will suggest it and see what you think.

Is an alternative to handicapping for the fast people to restrict their rating ?

ie 10k race for me 39:40ish and unrestricted rate but someone who could do that easily could choose to do it at a maximum of 22spm ? The difference is that everybody starts at same time and the field is tight all the way through the race. Also everybody has a tough challenge.

Has anybody tried this ?

Bill
