Hi all,
I have set up a 30 minutes race for next saturday March 26-th 19:40 GMT at the e-row server. Everyone welcome. My target is a PB which is currently 8576 (1:45), but if you are a lot faster or slower don't let that withhold you to check in.

Jaap
My best 30 min row for the year is 8,577m. I rowed it on RowPro, so if you want a good pace boat, download RowPro and my file. Stay with my boat and you have a PB! Nothing too it!

I am not sure if I can join to defend my position in the rankings. The way you have been trashing me lately, I have no doubt that you will easily do a PB on Saturday.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

Good job Joap and Doug. A couple of times during the piece I thought about going harder than 1:47 but convinced myself it would not be in my best interests. It was evident in the last few minutes of the piece. I thought about the 8k we did a few days ago where I had to stop outright. So, 1:47 proved to be the best course of action today. We can always try again another month from now. I would probably row the first 21 minutes at 1:47, access my effort, and make a decision there to whether or not to go harder.

Later,
Thomas

Thought it was going to be easy because the pb at the 10k 3 weeks ago averaged 1:44.6 which would bring me exactly at 8600. The start felt very good, and I was seduced to row the first 10 minutes sub 1:44. At halfway there was this guy with a big hammer. Couldn't keep the pace sub 1:47 for the last 10 minutes , but enjoyed the race between Thomas and Doug . They were both averaging 1:47.0/1 during the entire race, resulting in a new pb for Doug (8410), and a 40+pb for Thomas (8415) as well. Congratulations to you both.
I will try the 30 minutes and maybe the 60 minutes another time in april, but doubt if I can make up the one meter difference between Paul and me . From april to september I will drop the c2 training from 4 times a week to once a week, because the biking season has begun.

Jaap

Thanks for choosing 1:47 pace, Thomas. We were 1 to 3 meters apart most of the race, until near the end when I tired a bit and you kept on rowing strong. I was hoping to row below 1:47 in the last 10 minutes, but that just wasn't happening today. I'm still happy with my PB of 8410 meters - that's probably about as far as I can go for 30 minutes. My previous PB (8402) was at 29 spm, and today was 26/27 spm.

Jaap - if you set up another 30:00 some weekend, I might try it at 20 spm, just to do something different. And that hammer guy - he shows up for my 2000 meter races and weighs about a thousand pounds!

Good job guys Thomas you moved up to the "old mans" category now then!?

If you are doing the 60min next week, count me in for that, then we could go for the HM in a few weeks times.

Sir Pirate

I just added my result. I went from 8434 meters, ranked 29 of 892 (Top 3%), to today's 8415 meters, ranked 18 of 973 (Top 2%).

I would like to do some other distances like 500, 1k, 2k, 5k, 6k, and 10k for 2005 ranking year. Interesting is that the times and respective rankings for each age group are not too far off from one another. April is going to be a busy month for me so, I am not sure how I would fit these in with my regular training and not disrupt what I am doing. Since February, I have consistently been weight training and have made significant gains without apparently sacraficing cardio issues. Today's 30 minutes appears to be evident of that as well as the 2k I pulled last week with Doug. Last Thursday, I happy to report that I benched press 225 pounds (100 kilos) eight times which is something I had not done in a very long time. Also, I have been doing squats and had worked up to sets of eight reps with 225 pounds. I think with the bench press, I will work at doing sets of 8 and avoid increasing the weight. When I was able to bench press 300 pounds in 2001, my chest was oddly tight and this was also a time I had stopped running to work on my bench press max. With squats, I am not sure. I spent the whole month of February doing sets with only 135 pounds to allow my legs to adjust to the movement. I then went up to 185 pounds followed recently with 225 pounds. Like I mentioned in previous threads, I have been rowing in the morning and lifting weights at night.

I think the significant gains in rowing will come in another five months. I reviewed my records and discovered that it was after about seven months of Wolverine Plan training where my big gains came in 5k, 6k, 10k, in addition to the 2k back in 2003. I remember doing a strenous session one night followed 9 hours later the next morning by rowing a 5k in 16:54.

I think that it is also important to remember that something like today's 30 minutes was strenuous. Next week, 1:47 might actually be too much. Just a few days ago, I had to stop outright during an 8k at a 1:47 pace. I paddled to the 5k mark and logged off. I just did back and biceps in weight training tonight so, I could I expect to row anything supersonic tomorrow.
