I am going to take the big step and row a full marathon. Going to do it on e-row, any others interested? Would like to row it with someone else if possible, but if no interest I will do it off line.

Was thinking of end of April / early May. Need to get a few miles in and learn how to row and drink at the same time first.

Sir Pirate

Pieter, I have not been brave enough to row on-line using Row-Pro. Is it stable enough for up to 3 hrs of rowing in one session?

Sir Pirate

I did one the 12th of december togethet wit Paul Flack and Paul Knight and it was stable enough.
On the third of april we are with 8 participants it will be interesting to see if RP can handle that.
On the other hand the only thing that can happen is that you loose connection with the other competitors. Your time will be saved in your personal (RP-)rowinglog.

Hi,

Why not join us in the marathon challenge and watch the London live on TV at the same time.

If you haven't got RowPro yet, then download the free evaluation copy. Use Cee's Rerow to join the races so as not to waste your 10 free trials, then join us in the build up training rows and save a trial for the Marathon.

After discussion with other ergers about the RowPro London Marathon ( RLM ) it would be a good idea to set different races to suit rowers target times.

If you hope to achieve a row in a certain time then join that target RLM, if one is not set up that suits you then create the row and give details of the target time in the information field of the session setup.

The rows should be titled and targeted as follows:-

RowPro London Marathon: target - sub 2:45 - currently needs setting up.

RowPro London Marathon 2: target - 2:45 - 3:00 - currently 7 joined, ( if more than 8 join then set up RowPro London Marathon2/2).

RowPro London Marathon 3: target - 3:00 - 3:15 - currently 2 joined.

RowPro London Marathon 4: target - 3:15 - 3:30 - currently 1 joined.

RowPro London Marathon 5: target - plus 3:30 - currently needs setting up.

By setting a number of RLM's this will allow for a greater number of rowers to take part on the day.

It will be less intimidating to do the RLM with rowers of a similar pace, plus having the benifit of on screen company.

Just to add to Pieters comment, the RowPro Marathon in December ran perfectly throughout with our Results and Data recorded.

If you want to join the Marathon, but use e-row then join us through the 'digitalrowing server'!

Hope to see you there!

Regards Paul.

I planning on doing a July-August running marathon (winter here in Brazil). So this would help. End of Abril is probably during the Marathon Challenge. In May, would give me a leg up on the new season. Either way I qualify for a new mug because it is based on the calendar year. I'd probably do it between 3:00 and 3:06. So I might be a little slow if your little boat wants on-screen company. Of course, the more the merrier.

andy

I only plan to do a marathon once, and once only, so I want to go as hard as I can. I would aim for 1:55 - 1:56 pace, so will be looking for sub 2Hrs 45mins.

Is there a guide to an expected marathon time based on your 1/2 marathon time?

I have concerns about doing live on Row-Pro, as I see it as very unstable.

The more people we get the better, I like slowboats idea

Sir Pirate

Hi,

A 1:24 half should set you up for a sub 3:00 marathon. A sub 2:45 is going to take a lot of effort and training to achieve the goal.

The RowPro London Marathon is to be held on the 17th of April. With training a sub 2:45 is achievable.

My last marathon was 2:57, so I still have to take off +12 minutes, I think Pieter is well capable of going sub 2:45. However I am not sure if I can do it, but will go for it and set up a sub 2:45 row.

You can join through RowPro ( I have every faith that RowPro will see us through the Marathon ) or through e-row.

Unfortunately Paul Flack can't make it due to the Boston Marathon, but if we build up for the event I think we may break the 2:45 barrier on our own.

A sub 2:45 target RowPro London Marathon is now set up!

Regards Paul. YOHIMBE!

Hi Slowboat

My HM pb is 1:50 pace (77:28) what do you feel would be a sensible target to aim for for the FM.

I can do a HM at 22spm in 82:00 without any problems would aim to row the FM at 24/26spm.

I don't want to set my aims to high.

Thanks

Sir Pirate
Hi,

I think if you are aiming to row one Marathon and one Marathon only, then you've got to make it a good one!

This means a good build up, 10 weeks should do it! The London Marathon on the 17th of April is a good enough venue! Watching others suffer around the streets of London will add to the incentive.

If you can achieve a 1:22 half comfortably, then great. You can wind down a little as you nearly have a whole full minute extra to achieve the sub 2:45.
( A target of 1:20 for half way would be better allowing you to drop into recovery mode then adopt a planned tactical row for the last half in planned sections including any drinking, eating or rest periods ).

For me training is going to be intense as my best Half this season is 1:23:30ish.
But it sets me a goal and gets me back into rowing, as I had dropped off rowing for the last 6 or 7 weeks and started off road running in preparation for last Sundays Tough Guy event.

If honest a 2:50 is realistic for myself, but I am willing to be the back marker and go for a sub 2:50 and try to get as close to the 2:45 as i can.

I think Pieter and yourself have every chance of a realistic sub 2:45, and a few build up sessions together online at 25K+ in week 4+ should start to get us in our paces.

I'm using the Dutch Marathon as a benchmark, just a distance row ( butt build up ), but hope to crack 2:55.

Do you have RowPro Beta 5?

Regards Paul.

I had no problems at all rowing a marathon with RowPro. If you still want to use e-row, I think that you can join the rowers using RowPro by using the digitalrowing server. RowPro is supposed to work with all combinations of PM2+ w/e-row, PM2+ w/RowPro, PM3 w/RowPro.

I am still considering joining the London Marathon. The logistics of rowing a Boston Marathon are a bit difficult. I have two people visiting who will be running in the marathon and who might want support transportation. (One runner is Joachim Otto from Germany who rows regularly on e-row) Also, I have never seen the running course and don't know exactly where a row station can be set up. I am thinking it might be better to row the London marathon this year and then watch the Boston marathon the next day to scope out the course for a rowing marathon the next year.

On the other hand, I have about a dozen rowers who have expressed interest in rowing the Boston marathon whilst watching the running race. It would be great entertainment to watch the running race from the sidelines whilst rowing a marathon. Plus, I wouldn't feel silly if there were another nine rowers doing the same. Someone should start the first Boston rowing marathon. So far Concept and Digital Rowing have showed no interest in getting this going. So that leaves me, with the support and encouragement of about a dozen others that can not run in the Boston marathon for various reasons.

I hope to talk to some of the would be participants of the Boston Rowing Marathon during the venue races held on the next two weekends. Then I will decide which marathon to row.

Cheers,

Paul Flack
