A number of Online Marathons are being posted on the digitalrowing server for the 12th of December.

If you have RowPro, upgrade to the latest beta and join the event, you have four weeks to build up for the marathon.

E-row rowers can join by entering the new server or download the evaluation version from www.digitalrowing.com.

Hope to see you there, regards Paul.

I was surprised in the poll about online rowing, that several people picked the marathon as one of their favorite events to row online. My concern was that I don't want to race the marathon, or get dragged out too fast too soon. Also, I plan to stop every now and then so it will hard to synchronize with other rowers.

But I think the company and the motivation hopefully outweigh those challenges. So I think I will post another marathon for that day for later, probably 16:00 GMT. Hopefully, the bugs will be shaken out of rowpro by then and we can get an easy, clean start.

My plan is to row slow at 2:10 pace. I can row at 2:10 endlessly and my heart rate shouldn't go up at all. I also plan to stop briefly 3 times to drink and eat and stretch for a minute. So this would be perfect for a 1st marathon attempt. This will be my second, and I would like to come in around 3:05 or so.

I'd love the company if anyone else is up for the challenge.

I forgot to say that the "online marathon day" is right in the middle of the C2 holiday challenge, and if we do a half M the week or so before, that will put us a long way to rowing 200,000m during that period.

As noted on the Oarbits forum, I will probably struggle to find 3 hours in which to devote my time to the erg. However, if I can, I'll be there. My 30k test on Sunday was done at around 2:12 pace IIRC and felt comfortable, so I was thinking of aiming for 3:10 - 3:15 for the full marathon. That would make you an ideal rowing partner Michael. I won't sign up beforehand though, in case I can't make it. 9am GMT is likely to be difficult for me to be honest. 2pm GMT is more likely because my wife and kids normally go out for a few hours or more in the afternoons.

Paul's M was at 9 am GMT. I put mine up at 16 GMT. If 14 GMT (2pm GMT) is better for you, I can move it up though. I wanted enough time to have pancakes for breakfast, but I can get up by 7am and row at 9am, and still have time to eat in there. 15 GMT is also great for me (I went with 16 GMT for the west coast in the US, since that is 9am there and so should still work).

I'm hoping to complete the marathon in 3:00 - 3:15.

I intend to build up to a 35000m over the next 3 weeks, 25K-1st week, 30K-2nd week and 35K-3rd week.

Then hopefully the company and the event will see me through to completing the marathon distance.

If anybody is interested in training together then arrange and post a Marathon Training Session.

Honestly, I would skip doing the 35k. At that point, you have all the pain of a Full M, but none of the glory. The last 7k are downhill so to speak and shouldn't be a problem. I did a 30k the first time around, and I think that was useful mentally, and also to help plan drink and break strategy, and butt pads, etc. But I think one 25k or more row is enough for that. I think good steady hour rows are the basic foundation, since they reduce the expectation that you are ever going to finish while you are rowing, and the M ends up being about 3 of those in a row.

I am tempted to try a half M this time without stopping, or stopping only for moment or two, to push myself there. But once doing the full M, if you go at an easy pace and are in shape, as long as you can deal with the pain (butt, and hands mainly for me), you should be able to finish.

We can do the 12.5K as marathon training. The other key for me (I am much better at this now) is being able to hold a steady pace and SR for long periods without having to think about it, or worry about, and to fall into that natural rhythm.

Hi Michael,

I am building up to a 35K partly as a distance re-build after taking things easy for a while after a recent back injury, and partly as a physcological build up to the marathon ( not to mention butt build up ).

I am looking forward to the team 100K challenge this weekend, that looks like it will be run on the Beta 4 version, which Glenn says will be out within the next day.

The 12.5K will be a nice starting level.

I would like also to add that if anybody reading this post is interested in rowing the online marathon on the 12th of December then please join. If you can't make the times then post your own marathon row at a time which suits you, it may also suit other people and they can join your row. Set up the row on RowPro or RowPro Evaluation copy that can be found at www.digitalrowing.com .
If you have e-row then set up the row on the digitalrowing server.

Also a Marathon can be that little to long for some people , so it is an idea that some people could set up a half marathon on the 12th of December for those who would like to take part on RowPro Marathon day!

Regards Paul

I'll refrain from setting up my own Marathon just in case I am not able to make it on the day. As the race master it'd cause problems if I were a no-show, because I don't think there's any way to progress through check-in etc. if the race master himself doesn't turn up.

Hopefully, I'll be able to join in one of them just before it's due to kick off, but I really don't think I'll know until the moment comes. =)

Daren if you set up a Scheduled Session for the marathon, then decide you can't make it. All you do is drop out of the list and the next in line automatically becomes the race master!

It is nice to notify others by email or forum post, but they will know automatically that they are now the race master.

Hope you can make it mate, see you on Mace's 6K tomorrow.

For training upto the RowPro Marathon, you can virtually row 21097m with upto X16 rowfiles from the Concept2 ranking pages by downloading RowPro files and uploading them to RowPro.

Times range from 1:20:56.7 to 1:38:57.3

There are also X2 42195m rowfiles if you feel the need, Jeff Sauter's 2:48:37.0 and Chris Zimmermanns 3:19:31.5 ( After the 12th of December there should be one or two more )!

If you haven't yet got RowPro, download the evaluation version from www.digitalrowing.com and try virtually rowing with other rowers rowfiles. You can still be competitive or train with other rowers without being online at a time that suits you. ( Rowfiles can also be sent from rowers rowing logs on request )!

Great Stuff

Is that because you're in Blackpool or because you know I'm close to Blackpool (in Morecambe)? If it's the former, perhaps I could bring my erg to yours some time and we could suffer a Marathon together.
Sorry Daren I was thinking you were in Blackpool, I am in the East Midlands, miles away, born and lived in Lancashire as a kid, Haslingden.

If a number of races do get set up throughout the day, then like you were saying, you would probably be better logging on if you find yourself able to do so!

If not you could upload the recorded data another day and do the Marathon virtually!
