Eights are available in both light weight and heavy weight categories - how many different sizes, I don't know, but they are not a one size fits all. Training
The standard stroke gives a greater reach, at some positional disadvantage, but a longer pull, an advantage.

This "\" position stroke causes some loss of reach at the catch, but a stronger body position that should permit a stronger leg drive, and somewhat better use of the bigger back muscles. So the stroke is shortened a bit, but a stronger pull is in theory possible, and with accelerated slide, a fraction less loss of speed between strokes. If a little higher rating can be maintained, then this stroke at worst should give an equivalent result. I maintain it did act as something of an equalizer for the F8 I was a part of.

Depending on size, strengths, and experience (or lack) of a novice crew, and a coach's knowledge of technique variations, an alternate technique might be tried. Especially if they were completely inexperienced, majority mostly small in height and light in weight. UW and Cal my freshman year were big experienced crews. We beat Cal, we lost respectably to UW. Against Cal, their boat avg was about 50 lbs higher than ours, their avg height about 4 inches taller.

With an experienced crew, or just a new crew of experienced rowers, an alternate technique can be considered.

What argument do you have for all the warnings for people not to row, that they can or will hurt their backs ? Surely you've heard those.

1968, East Germans won the 4 w/o.
1964, Unified Germans won the 4 with.

I suspect the 4 w/o is the boat coach referred to. I have not found pics yet.
