We are 4k on the other side of Merritt now. The other 2k was gained from staying on the highway and not going off to fill up for gas!

We are now on the Merritt to Kamloops section. It is one of the shorter sections at only 85k, but it is uphill.

Keep on rowing, eh.

Jim
Keep going guys. 11k for me today. We should be able to make it to Kamloops by the weekend.

I will be travelling starting on Friday, so I may be a little slow in updating the site and getting the miles posted, but keep those kilometers coming in.

Jim

10 k for me today and a PB on the 500 by .9 seconds! My wife got me going on this. The ducks do a 500 on the fifth of each month so I tag along and do one. Not that I'm turning into a duck or anything. I'd rather be a Canadian, and not have to get all wimpy and fly south for the winter . Best wishes on your travels, Jim. John.

Wait to go guys, that puts at 400k.

You may have noticed that the terrain has changed since we passed the toll booth. We are no longer in the rain forests of the lower mainland, but on the lee side of the coast mountains. It is dry and hot and there may even be the odd rattle snake here. Tumbleweed is everywhere.
Here is a photo typical of the terrain we would be in now,

Tell me if you see a rattler,eh.

Congrats on the new 500 pb John.

Jim

Congrats on the PB John.

10K for me this evening.

Enjoy your trip this weekend Jim. Where are you going? Somewhere warm?

I have a question. How many of you guys are related, either by blood or marriage?

Darren

8K for me yesterday (7 + 1 warmup)

Nice PB John! How's MikefromCanmore doing? Haven't heard from him lately! I was thinking of him last night - I got back to the house around 8 PM last night and could hear someone erging in the basement. I went downstairs expecting to find Claudia putting in a few metres. But there was Marina, our six year old, doing a session. The little rascal ended up pulling for 18 minutes, covering 2450 metres, (that's how far it is to Auntie Amy's) and getting a few strokes down to the 3:10 range. Needless to say I was happy as a clam to see this, and she was laughing the whole way as well. Then Angela, our nine year old gave it a try as well, going for 20 minutes and covering about the same distance.

They had both erged before but only at my urging, so I was quite pleased with an impromptu session like this. They're both quite keen to help with the voyage across Canada.

QUOTE(NightRower @ Oct 6 2005, 06:57 AM)

I have a question. How many of you guys are related, either by blood or marriage?

I don't think any one of us are related in any way, although Bob and Doug Mackenzie are brothers to all of us.

That's great that your daughters were rowing Mark! You should ask them if they want to join the team. Even if they only do a few meters here and there it would help. Of course the more important thing would be that they are learning the importance of exercise and relating it to fun! I think if we could get a bunch of kids involved it would be fantastic!!! Good role modeling on your part!

Oh, I forgot about Darren's question. Zeb's (a.k.a. Mikefromcanmore) is my son. He is doing well Mark and getting into short track speed skating this winter. Shannon, My wife is speed skating too. We've been letting him know that rowing is good cross training for speed skating since both sports require a lot of power from the legs. So I'm hoping he'll row a bit more, but I'm trying not to be pushy.

I am only related to these guys through the McKenzie brothers,eh.

I will post your clicks when I get home.

I am off to your neck of the woods Darren. I will be picking up my son from school near Victoria. He, one of his classmates and I will head over to Seattle for the Canadian thanksgiving.

We usually try and take in the Seahawks game, but all of the teams are out of town for the weekend. So it will just be a boys weekend out. I may check out the Seattle Rowing Centre.

Jim

Speed skating is something I would love to try! Being Canadian, can anyone bet which winter sport I played for more than 10 years?

If you guessed hockey you would be right!!

Jim, the rowing clubs on Lake Union are great. To see the rowers going through the cut on a sunny morning is inspiring. My wife and I hope to join the University crew in the next few months (being state employees we can use the university benefits for dirt cheap prices. Access to lessons and boats is something like $10 to $20 per month on top of the intermural fee of $15 per month).

Enjoy your trip down. If I wasn't working I would invite myself along!

Take care and have a good trip.

Darren

Mark, your daughters did great!!! I would have been proud too! They have got to be near the top of their age group!!!!

You're right, it sure warms the heart to see the kids taking part in some activity and really enjoying it. We dropped our Starchoice TV subscription a year ago when we began some home renovations, and have yet to re-sucscribe - best move we ever made IMO. The kids seem to be much more interested in what's going on around them, play together much better and are more active in general. Although I do miss some of the sports action!

Mark
