http://www.furman.edu/first/index.htm

I found it in my runner's world mag. Once you get both sports on some solid ground they go pretty well together. I might even go as far to say that on a limited time budget spreading your intense sessions across two sports is optimal in some cases.

It's been a bit quiet on this thread recently.

I'm still mixing the erging and rowing, doing both at 70% of working heart rate for each activity.

Current 10km times and km paces at this intensity:

Erging: 41m20s, 4m08s

Running: 44m54s, 4m30s

I've signed up for a HM in April, and will probably sign up for a 10K in March.

If you get a chance, maybe you could fill me in more on the 70% thing, eh? I'd appreciate it . John.

By the way, I've only done one run so far, way to busy lately . But it felt great to be on the trails again! I'm hoping in the next week or two to be able to run 2-3 times / week. That's great that you're signed up for some races! It helps me with training if I know something is coming up in the future. John.

Google Map is a great means for checking out the mileage of a new route. Easy to use, just double click on points on the route and it can be saved as a URL

GMAP

I think 70% for running would be a little slow/easy for me Rob. It is probably the pace I run off-road at which is nearer 8 minute miles than 7

Well January was a tough month for running training. I was running well in late December with a tempo training paces around 7:00/mile and faster, but then my knee was acting up so I packed in the running more or less and instead rowed (about 140k). My calendar had a 10 mile race penciled in for today and for weeks I was not sure I was going to do it. I rearranged the goals and figured I do it for fun. I was not sure how much speed I had lost with the break, so judging pace was going to be hard. When the race got off I moved up into a faster pack of racers and was hitting 7:00 minute miles for most of the first 5 miles. I was happy but wondering if I'm just being stupid. At 6.2 miles I had easily bettered my 10k PB(43:58 set in November). That was cause for celebration right there but that party was muted when the reality of 4 more miles still lingered. The knee was fine and my little squeezie bottle of Hammer gel and water were great for the energy needs. 10 miles is a tough distance since you can go fast, but it's still over an hour of running. Racing over these distances is all new to me so I played the rest of the race conservatively assuring that distance racing leaves a good taste in my mouth (what great excuses we can make up!). The next four miles were about 7:23/miles and a little uphill in general. I crossed the line comfortably in 72:18 or (7:14/mile). Not bad considering the dearth of running I had in the bank this past month. Rowing did well to sustain me.

I must say this is one sure way to wipe you out. I was dragging all day.
Well done Jim. Good race on not a lot of input. I have proved to myself over recent months that rowing can cause any running fitness to be retained, certainly for a period of up to about 2 -3 months.

You say you are not used to racing distance work but you have been running further than 10 miles in training haven't you. Is a HM race on the cards now then? Sub 1:30 looks a possibility if you paced it right and got that extra mileage in that you need.

I myself managed 2 good runs this weekend which is unusaul. More in my diary

First Run in three months and it was great! OK so it was only three miles but I was amazed at how good I felt, no doubt because of the rowing I started two months ago. Cardio wise, I felt like I could run forever but my legs were the limiting factor. Who would have thought that 3 miles could leave me soar the next day. Looking forward to easing back into running on rowing as well.

About 15km's in and around Kananaskis village on the x-c ski trails. I have the Yaktrax on my trail shoes for gripping the snow. It still feels like running in sand though.

I did a hill session yesterday, and felt it tonight on my 8km row.

Feeling fit, but very tired.

Just an update to say that I completed my 20 mile fell race today in a much better time than I or anyone else expected from me. 3:56, breaking the 4 hour barrier which is quite a challenge for a lot of the runners. I was not passed by a runner after 1/2 mile and worked my way through the field always chasing the next runner ahead, although that was sometimes up to 1/2 a mile away as we were well strung out

Traininh up to 1st Jan was pretty non-existent through injuries but I have worked hard since then culminating in two 40+ weeks.

I did not know if I would last out as the furthest I have run in 17 years is 13 miles and certainly nothing as tough as todays race. Conditions were clear but bitingly cold with a lot of frozen peat groughs to skate over and then wade through the unfrozen bogs.

More details in my diary. To sum up I am pretty pleased with myself.

John

Twenty miles, 4000 ft. and the ground conditions uneven and slippery, wow that's tough and to do that in under 4 hours, well done. Your conditioning is excellent to be able to do this in basically a two month running plan. Good luck on the three peaks race! John.

Great Going John. I was watching the Olympic Downhill last night and that was just 3000ft of vertical so I came to appreciate your race even more!

I ran Fri, Sat and Sunday for 6 miles each day, but today I'm stuck down by a stomach bug. I can barely shuffle down the hall and have no energy.

Ha, I know your game Mr Barry, 3 days of good running and then a bit of snow comes along and suddenly you are too ill to shovel it.

Get better soon, you are on a roll at the moment, all that trail running

Cheers John, I need to force myself to get back to the rowing but felt tired today so I could not be bothered basically. WIRC could be embarassing but I am hoping to fit a 5 mile race in on race day - Fresh Ponds. Depends on the time of my race really. Although I am tempted to run rather than row anyway if I cannot do both.

Hi,
had my first run of the year today, during lunchtime on the university tracks near where I work.
2,5 k warmup, some gymnastics and then 5*800m@4'/1km with 200m rest.
Including cooldown, about 10k for today
Felt quite tough, but great fun, as I'm not very used to do interval training for running.
Let's see how I feel tommorrow.
Hope I will be able to start again with 2 runs a week.
