I usually go higher than the 70% mark with HR during a race. When I did the erg marathon recently, my pulse averaged 168bpm (my max. is 187.) I really paid attention to my pulse which made the race more interesting. When my pulse went above 168 my breathing rate increased and I would end up having to slow down my pace until my heart rate was 168 or less. I didn' have as much luck using a HR monitor with running. We have a really fun relay race here called the Klondike Road Relay that goes from Skagway Alaska to Whitehorse (10 person teams ~120 miles.) My slowest time ever on it was the year that I used a heart rate monitor and kept my pulse at around 70-75%. I felt great after the race with lots of energy, a sure sign for me that I should have pushed harder. I think it is the uneven terrain with running. I like to push it up the hills and and use the downhills to allow some recovery, so keeping an even HR in running didn't work for me. I seem to have better luck paying attention to my breathing. I think that using heart rate for rowing is great though. Since the workout is so even (no hills!!!) it really allows me to keep better tabs on how my HR compares to my pace, and then if there is anything I could do with my technique to keep the pace high and lower HR.
Nicely done on the half marathon, Rob.

Here is the list of people I have signed up for the January challenge at Concept2.

Francois Audet
John Berryman
Linda Corkal
Jim Corkal
Daryl Muz
Michael Siska
Brian Turner
Jill Vandal

If you are a member of the Eh!Team and you are not on this list, please send me your e-mail address so I can add you. This makes it very easy for us to keep track of our kilometers and will save posting kilometers here on the forum, although you still can if you want to. It will make it much easier for me to keep track of our mileage as we begin the Eh!Team round the world row.

So please, please, send me your first name, last name, e-mail address. This must be the same that you have stored in your Concept2 profile. I cannot see or alter your profile. To make it easy for you just contact us at Cross Canada Row and send me your:

email
firstname
lastname

These are the instructions from Concept2.

Thanx,
Jim

A total of 16K over the weekend.

I moved the erg upstairs and rowed with Xeno and his DVD#4, doing 3x6' starting at 20 SPM and working up to 28 SPM. It's nice to see someone in action that you know for sure is doing things right. It's also quite amazing how relaxed he and his partner appear even while they pull 1:40 for 6' straight.

I'm feeling much better now, although I am quite concerned that I may have passed the flu on to my pet chickens.

Well, this January Team Challenge looks like a good opportunity for me to join my fellow Canucks without abandoning my loyalty to the Ducks. So count me in! I have sent an email to you, Jim.

- Krysta

Welcome Krysta!

December 19th -20K. 1:12:37 - 1:48.9 splits. Would have been faster but the wiring is such that the A/C and oven can't be on at the same time, so I had to reset the breakers twice.

Cheers,

Brian

Welcome aboard Krysta, we look forward to having you join the Eh!Team for the January challenge. Paddle a few more of those ducks over here!

As of December 19th our January virtual team looks like this:

Eh!Team January Challenge
Barb Clayton
Barry Gilhuly
Bill Slater
Brad Hurley
Brian Turner Yes
Carol Kittridge
Chris Badenoch
Darcy McKittrick
Darren Slater
Daryl Muz Yes
Debra Berry
Ed Desjardins
Francois Audet Yes
Gut Bustin'
Holly C
Jill Vandal Yes
Jim Corkal Yes
Joe Bishop
John Berryman Yes
Kirk Nelson Yes
Krysta Coleman Yes
Linda Corkal Yes
Lorri MacKay
Mark Keating Yes
Michael Siska Yes
Rick Kipfer
Rob Clayton Yes
Tamara Gilhuly
Trevor Reeves Yes
Zeb Berryman

If your name is bolded with a yes next to it, I have been able to add you to the January virtual challenge. If it is not, I have not been able to add you.
If you would like to participate please send me:
First Name
Last Name
email address.
These must match the data that on file in your concept2 profile.

I would encourage all members of the Eh!Team to enroll. It makes it a LOT easier for me to keep track of the team mileage for posting our Cross Canada Row and our upcoming Around the World Row. It will also mean you do not have to post your miles to the forum if you do not want to. All you will have to do is enter your miles in your concept2 online log book, how ever you do now, and they will be automatically added to the Eh!Team virtual row. If you are a member of another team, like ducks in a row or iron oarsman, etc..., your miles will still be attributed to them for Concept2 logging purposes.

Hope this confusion helps. Just send me your first name, last name, email, eh.

Jim
