Ouch, Carla, bad news about the bike crash. Some of my greatest hits have been big offs on my bike(s). The first one I remember was when I was 5, and just learning to ride. I still recall how my knee when septic. The next big one was when a friend of mine cut me up when we were about 9 or 10. His back wheel clipped my front wheel as he went across, and I went flying into the road. Then there was the time I wiped out on the ice on the way to school; the time I was watching a pretty girl and rode into a kerb, going over the handlebars; the time I was riding down some monument steps and didn't have my weight far enough back; the time I stacked on a big downhill at about 50mph; the time I bent my handlebars around a tree; the time... Well, you get the picture. All the times I've come off my bike, and I still can't persuade myself to wear a helmet. Ho hum.

Good job on the PB despite the crash though. =)

Hi Carla

Nice to hear from you. Congratulations on the time trial. You're a real tough cookie. A pb after a crash is impressive.

Bernard

Daren,

Do your friends call you "Lucky"??

All,

As I didn't have chance to do my 10K yesterday (due to work commitments), I decided to do one today. Felt pretty good so decided to see if I could break 40 mins. Decided to try and maintain a 1:58/1:59 rate throughout and pretty much managed it apart from the last 3K. Went through 5K at 19:50 and made sure I concentrated on a relaxed form and not panic myself into a loose and inefficient stroke. Pain management and strong mental focus was needed by me and I must admit the thought of posting another PB/SB on the Taff Attack thread certainly spurred me on. Final time for the 10K was:

39:35.2

(Previous season's best was 40:05).

I also recorded a PB for 30 mins (7579m) and 6K (23:44.4). So that's 5 PBs and a Season's best in 3 days! I think I should take a 2-week break from rowing more often!

For those that are interested, my splits were:

1:58.1 (26spm)
1:57.3 (28)
1:58.9 (27)
1:59.1 (26)
1:58.5 (27)
1:58.4 (27)
1:58.1 (27)
1:59.0 (27)
1:58.9 (27)
1:59.7 (27)
1:59.3 (27)
1:59.1 (28)
1:58.2 (27)
1:58.6 (28)
2:00.0 (28)
2:00.4 (27)
2:00.3 (27)
1:59.5 (28)
2:00.5 (27) - decided to rest at 2:00 to enable me to have a quicker last 500
1:53.6 (29) - managed to get the rate down to 1:39 at the end!

So to say I'm pleased would be an understatement! I have to thank my fellow Taff Attack team members for their continued support and motivation. Without you guys, I'd still be happy with sub-41mins for 10K!

Daren,

My last two best bike crashes:

When I was 18, I was doing some long rides, around 50 miles or so, and at one point got into that "zone" where you forget you're actually on the bike. Well as I went along I noticed that my handlebars weren't straight, and without thinking (obviously) just gave them a good hard wrench to fix that (as if I was standing in front of the bike with the wheel between my knees). As I flew through the air I remember laughing but it was a long walk back with the bike on my shoulders (lucky I was only about 4 miles from home) since the front wheel was shaped like a pretzel.

The other good one was another time I was trying to do a particular ride faster than before, at Acadia National Park. By this time I was 36 or so and should have known better... They are gravel roads there and there are horse carriages occasionally. You are supposed to be polite and stop and let them by when you meet them. But I was going downhill at 25 and instead of stopping I did a nice spread eagle right in front of the carriage. Those horses were bomb proof, they didn't even blink. I should have just slowed a bit and gone on by, because they wouldn't have even noticed. Yes, I did beat my time.

I ALWAYS wear a helmet, even though I've never hit my head on any crash.

Carla

Hi everyone,
I'm back amoung the living again. I got back on the machine on the weekend and am quickly feeling 'normal' again (whatever normal may be!) When I got home from class tonight I did a pretty good 12km. I'm starting back slowly but have my eye on Chris. Tonight I'm within 33km of him! If he takes the rest of the week off I may catch up to him! What do you say Chris?!?
It's so awesome to see so many people getting new SB and PB's!! Way to go! I can hardly wait until I'm back in form to try for some SB's because I'm sure I'll get lots of support from all of you!
Great to hear you had a good weekend Carla! Way to go with the race!

Debra

Glad to see you on the forum, Debra, and to see your meters going UP! Chris had better watch out! I expect you'll have some Nonathlon points coming as soon as you really feel "normal", too. Hey, are you 40 yet? Hope not I'm not sure I want you in the same bracket!!!

I did a bunch of junk meters that added up to 6K today--everything felt funny from the crash but I figured rowing a bunch of junk was better than nothing. BTW the bike ride wasn't a race, it was just me against the odometer...

Carla

Attagirl Debra, show Chris no mercy ! Poor guy's really under the hammer - Chippy pulling away towards the 1 Mill mark and he needs a wide-angle screen to keep my pace boat in sight You're still a FM up on me though Chris (and I'll love every stroke !).

Gutsy ride after the accident Carla - inspired by Chippy's triathon exploits no doubt. Better stick to erging - its not so far to fall I did a 'soft' 2 x 5K today to ease back into it, still stiff and sore so, unlike Niall, no big ones this week.

Top row Niall, you really monstered that 40 min barrier. Must be a big confidence booster to hold sub 2:00's for so long, puts a 15K 60 miniter onto the radar screen ?! How's the Km count for the 1 MM Challenge, up to one third yet ?

Cheers to youse all,

Martin

Welcome back Debra! Good to see you putting in the metres. I'm sure it wont be long until you're posting PBs/SBs.

Watch your back Chris! Debra's got you in her sights!

QUOTE

How's the Km count for the 1 MM Challenge, up to one third yet ?

Thanks for asking Martin. The Million Metre Challenge is now up to 341,000m completed. I'm currently 67,000m ahead of schedule (and that should be 80K by the end of today as I plan to do 20K over two sessions).

As you can probably appreciate, I'm feeling in top form right now. Today's rows are going to be steady though - no PB/SB attempts today!

Hi People

An absolute nightmare time at work, so couldn't put in the metres. Did 12000 metres this morning. 8x500m tonight.

Keep those metres coming in Debra! Nice to see you're recovering from your ailments and are ready to go get Chris! By the way if a good 12k is starting slowly, what do you do when you're up to speed.

Niall, you are a star! The rest has done you a power of good. Congrats on your sub 40 minute 10k mate. You're getting a little to close to me for comfort.

Does anyone know when Dwayne comes back from his honeymoon?

Bernard

Crazy? Why? Whenever anyone thinks of long, slow, steady, rhythmical strokes, getting faster and more powerful until thrashing wildly to an exhausted but satisfying finish, whilst on honeymoon, erging immediately comes to mind.

Doesn't it? I don't know what you mean Sir Pirate!

I can just about make out the stern of your erg on the horizon but there's plenty of water between us.

I don't know about the rest of the team but I'm very much looking forward to seeing the latest Taff Attack interview posting. The Big Man Down Under , Mr AussieTaff will no doubt provide us with a mix of humour and insightful rowing titbits and I just can't wait!

For those sharp-eyed ergers out there, you will have noticed that I've changed my signature. It still contains the same information but I've reformatted it so it's not a sprawling mass of numbers (should increase the number of posts per page!).

Stop Press :-

Proposed debate deadline blows out - Aussie Taff holding out for a trunkful of used Euros, other party wants AT to pay them !! Also AT unhappy with format - 3 legged stool in corner with no Internet connection, suspicious of pointy hat with a D on it.

On a more positive note - possibility of debate overshadowing some other debate taking place in US now less likely after latest delay.

"Scoop" Taff signing off,
