oh my goodness! i can't even imagine rowing for 90 mins without stopping. however, i will try a 6k tomorrow and maybe add 1k every time i do a long row (long for me, that is). it is quicker to row as far when you're just keeping going, rather than taking short breaks in between shorter distances, so i should be able to fit that into my schedule. actually, monday is my day off when i get some peace and quiet so maybe monday can be long row day and i can really get to grips with learning french as well!

jane

(i might just be tempted to have a bash at a quicker 500m though )

What is a nonathon?

I just raced in the novice row at Indy Indoor Sprints. I wanted to make sure I did not start out too fast and "fly'n'die" but I couldn't help it! I was trying to tell myself to slow down ... but I was confused. I didn't understand the monitor would count down meters so I couldn't understand how I was almost finished when I just started ... I figured it out when the monitor said 600 m. But I was going to die. Fortunately, a friend came to watch and shouted at that moment and I kept going. at 300 meters I knew I would die but shouting again helped me on. At 100 meters I could hear my heart in my ears but I was told I was neck and neck with someone. Hurray I FINISHED! 1000 m in 4:20.1 seconds. My PB (at home with no adrenalin was 5:10). My heart rate maxed at 213 bpm. Guess I was really out of control!

Susan

But I can pull <1:55 for 60min happily at 20spm.

Xav

Xav,

Don't you think you should at least do a marathon, before you jump to the erroneous conclusion that 500 meters is the toughest event.

Anyway you think 500 meters is toughest, yet you did it at 45 spm.

What is confusing is why you then try to give advice that 20 spm is more intense, when it obviously isn't, not even for you.

However I agree that low rates can be more *strenuous* in some aspects, such as injurious to the wrists etc.

hey there guys! don't you think you could leave us newbies just this one little thread for OUR problems?!

speaking for myself, i have found some of the input REALLY helpful. but other stuff is incomprehensible and just plain confusing.

it's much easier for you to start a new thread than it is for me to do a sub9 2k!!!!

thanks
jane
Jane, are you using RowPro with your Mac (perhaps with Windows emulation software)? If so, could you let me know how it's working? I'm fed up with my Dell and am considering making the change.

Thanks!

alas, i don't have windows emulation software. as a family, we all use macs because we're musicians. there's so much to think of as a newbie, and the software side of things is one bit i haven't got to grips with at all. as soon as i give it a go, i'll let you know (i don't even know what rowpro does!).

new stuff from mac will be announced on tuesday and it's bound to be as cool as ever!

jane (who loves her mac AND her c2)

Many thanks! (When you have time, you might want to look at the RowPro software. It allows one to train/race online with others who have CIIs. So far, from what I've heard it may not be Mac compatible. Alas!)

HI everybody!

Thanks for all the things I learned from reading today on the forum. (Sorry I don't remember who wrote what to thank you by name).

1) Now I know what a nonathon is.
2) I understood what rowing strapless was a while ago but today I learned WHY one would do such a thing. Previously when rowing strapless I would just dig my heels in and pull with the plastic foot thing. NOW I see that bending forward and leaning the arms in starts the natural momentum back to the catch! Thanks for making that understandable.
3) I too struggle with feeling like my legs aren't really working hard. The move the handle and the seat at the same speed until you run out of legs make sense and my legs are VERY tired after this row today.

I focused on technique today as I am wore out from the sprint yesterday.

Susan

Little weed,

and other newbies. Don't be too worried about the long rows (at lower intensities). I have been doing some and was real worried before I did it. I actually find them easier than the shorter higher intensity rows. You kind of struggle til you get over a hump in the first 10-20 minutes and then settle into a comfortable rythm thats quite sustainable.

If any of you haven't been to the concept 2 UK site (not the US site), your missing quite a bit. They have a training manual and an interactive training program that allows you to enter in your current fitness level and best 2k time. From there, a personal workout plan is developed for you. The neat thing is that there is a chart that should equate a certain rowing rate and pace for a given heart rate zone. For me, it has been amazingly accurate and helpful.
