[quote=RockinRobin,Sep 5 2005, 06:13 PM]
That was a good trial for me to see what kind of training I need to do to work up to a marathon. And I'm definately not ready for that any time soon. I hit the wall right before 30K even with 15 - 30 minute rests between rows.

Anybody have any extra tips on improving endurance? I have read the UK site training schedules for marathon, but if anyone else has any extra rowing tips, I'd enjoy reading them.

For my half marathon I put bubblewrap on the seat... bubblewrap on the handle... and I didn't think or worry about my pace... it is my plan to do a marathon by the end of the month.

Jim

You mean 2500m is NOT a workout?!?!? Arghhhhhhhhh.......
And yep......5000m on a really good day. I don't guess I've crossed over to the 'other side' yet. I haven't even SEEN the other side. Oh well.....I'll keep trying. Lana

When I got my model B... Progress of any sort is always good! And Jason glad you got back on to row today too!

I'm going to start rowing Tuesday, but certainly won't be able to do any where near the type of meters I tried over the weekend, lol. (so if you want a head start here is your chance or a rest day if you need it).
.......

Hello, Robin!

I did a 2K warmup, 1/2 marathon, and 5K cooldown today. So methinks I may beat you to that 400K - but who knows what tomorrow may bring!

I certainly get sore around 30K. Although my last marathon (OK - first AND last Marathon
timing was in the dirt (3:21:49, oh yeah, .3!) I just wanted to finish. So I traded off counting 100 meters of slow pace with 100 meters of medium pace, and so on. Once I hit around 35K, I struggled and wanted to quit - but the thought of having to admit defeat after having gone so far was a bit embarrasing. So I figured, just a few more strokes and I'll stop to rest (of course I didn't - I knew if I stopped I'd never start back up again) and that seemed to really help get past the wall

This being my first marathon, I may have been enamoured by the whole glory of it all - the real test is going to be my 2nd marathon, which will just be a repeat performance. That's the real test of it for me.

My son did keep me stocked with gatorade and water - and that made a difference in the last few km. There doesn't seem to be any easy way around it for me even on the 1/2 marathons - I just have to slog through it.

Discipline is the art of closing the gap between your physical and mental limitations. The body is always capable of more than the mind will allow it!

I know you can make it though, Robin - look what you've done these last few days! perhaps we can schedule our next marathon on the same day - knowing that the other is pulling for us at the same time may help us get to the finish line - a little 'virtual' teamwork, so to speak.

Have a good rest - those days are just as important!

Z

Actually, my brother was at my parents cabin this weekend over the holiday. He's pretty out-of-shape ex-rower, and got on that thing..... it always amazes me what men can pull, even at lower fitness levels!!!! And as much as you've been doing, I know your fitness level will adjust upwards very quickly. This poor gal doesn't want to get left behind when you hit that guy upswing, 'cuz I know I won't be able to keep up with that, even with you spotting me 20 seconds! Do you realize that an 8' 2K is a 2:00 split? AAAAAARGH!

But if it makes you feel better, I will say that I have to go to the chiropractor this AM because my lower back is bothering me (and there will probably be some enforced rest involved with that as well, so you get some days on while I have to take off).

BTW, do you like the heart rate monitor? I've been debating about buying one, but they cost $$$ I haven't wanted to spend yet.

Julie

Oh well.....I'll keep trying. Lana>>>

Depending on what one is trying to accomplish, 2500m can certainly be a workout! And if I were doing what I used to do and complete the 2500 in under 10, it would certainly be a workout (assuming I didn't fall over from cardiac arrest).

Rather than push my heartrate up to 90% and risk death, most of the time I now row for endurance.... I've backed off so that most workouts I try to stay below 2:30/500... and row for 30-90 minutes

At 45 yrs. I think 65-70% of max heartrate will make more of a contribution to my overall fitness than 10 minutes at 85-90%....

So, Lana - by all means keep trying... the C2 is an awesome workout, and we all have to decide what we are trying to accomplish and hopefully get a little better on a regular basis... This is one exercise that for most, even when you think you have crossed over to the other side, it doesn't take long to find folks who have ascended further than what might seem humanly possible... so we do what we can do when we can do it.

Jim

ok.. i finally figured out what these affiliations and virtual teams were all about and I decided to join Row Pain, Row Gain!

I got my C2 Model D about 7 weeks ago.. about the same time I started posting to these forums..

I think this forum is great! When I first picked ordered my C2 I was skeptical that I would be able to maintain interest in it for very long.. but its amazing how just being able to read and discuss the C2 here on these forums has helped me stay motivated...

So far on average, I row about 5 days a week, usually for 5K to 6K each time. I generally just row set distances, with an occassional "Just Row" thrown in when I"m not sure how motivated I am to finish a 6K.. (I usually end up doing 6K anyway, but it feels better starting out with the option to just stop at any time).

I'm intrigued over the interval training pieces, just havent really tried any out yet..

In an effort to get into better shape, I've also given up drinking soda and caffeine.. and i've cut down on the desserts (love ice cream and doughnuts) pretty much altogether. When I get a sweet tooth, I'll make myself a fruit smoothie and that helps curb the hunger..

While I can't say I feel that much better, I do think I've lost a little weight.. down to around 178 lbs from 186 lbs.. cant say for sure though, since I havent really been tracking it all that closely...

Anyway.. after reading the stories and posts in this thread, I decided this was the right group for me to join and to contribute my hard earned rowed meters too..

-Sleepy Floyd (aka George)
Glad to have your meters in the club, but more importantly, glad to have YOU in the club!

I just got my C2 about a month ago, so it looks like we are both 'newbies', but I congratulate you on giving up the sweets and caffeine. Think of it as cutting way back, not cutting it out - that way if you have an occasional indulgence its in the plan and the guilt won't kick in. Sometimes the guilt/frustration can cause one to just blow it and give up. Trust me on that one!

Consistency is the key to any habit and you are building some great habits! 5 days a week with 5k-6K is a good start. Over time, you may want to invest in the heart rate monitor, and spread your workouts over the various heart rate thresholds - that can really help with increasing endurance, losing weight and reducing times - if any of that interests you. Interval training can also add some excitement to an otherwise routine workout - but one thing at a time

Hope to hear from you often!

Z
