Ged, sneak a Kodo cd into a gym and see what happens. I wonder if the jocks will be able to keep up.

I went to a Kodo performance last night. (taiko drumming) What an inspiration!! Hey everyone...this is my first post here (love my model D btw). I've been listening to a DJ Z-Trip mix called "uneasy listening". It's a mix of classic rock (Pink Floyd, Rush, Kansas, etc.) mixed with hip-hop beats. Seems to be doing it for me, since I find myself hypnotized by the visualizations program I have feeding into my TV as I row. I've happily rowed past my time/meter objective and not even noticed. Sometimes I listen to really hard stuff (Rage Against The Machine, Crystal Method, Rammstein, KMFD). But, lately I've found that I like rowing to slower stuff like Cake, Beck...maybe I'm just not pulling hard enough.

My taste in music is a little more eclectic than most. But my preferred is Richard Thompson. For some reason I like to row to Led Zep even though I am not a big fan. The Clash. Professor Longhair or some boogie-woogie piano is great to row to.

Lately I have been watching DVD concerts. You got the music and the visual distraction when your sick of looking at the PM2. Particularly, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane (on a TV show, lasts 23 minutes but I loop it over and over), Talking Heads (Stop Making Sense) and a Brazilian rock group I heartily recommend Pato Fu

I try to see them every time they tour the US, though I've missed them the past couple of times. The CDs are just a dark and hazy reflection of the experience of them live, unfortunately.

Abe

I have the advantage of having been in the stereo business a long time ago so I have some powerful speakers set up in front of my erg. Nothing can compare with the sound a 6' diameter drum live though. I had seats in the 2nd row, so I replay the performance in my head.

I'll check out 'Moby'. I need some contemporary music too.

grams

I'm on Mac OS X, and I use the freeware program ltjBPM to feed BPM counts into iTunes. (There are plenty of other freeware options for both Mac & PC.) I prefer to row between 26 & 30SPM, so any song that falls between 104 & 120BPM goes into my "Rowing" playlist. I've got about 11 hours' worth of row-ready tunes queued up. Selections range from Celia Cruz to Ursula 1000 to Stan Getz to vintage Bon Jovi. Stevie Wonder is a particularly fertile source of rowing tunage, who knew? I set the iPod on Shuffle, and away I go.

My music collection is about 250g, so my 40g iPod is just a slice. But creating a smart playlist that parses BPM is a great idea. My music is pretty varied, but current rowing faves include Pearl Jam, Midnight Oil, and Moby.

Thanks for the cool tip.

Aaron

Has anyone really thought about Jesus Jones, Greenday (american idiot is really amazing, but I like all of their stuff), Franz Ferdinand, some really bouncy Less Than Jake (ska), some Dead concerts and the Refreshments. Ska stuff is so much fun to pull to.

There is so much music out there from many cultures that can get you going.
