Kevin,

Still doing the mountain daily. It's been hot and lately very, very humid. We had our first really good rain, wind storm last night. Lost a tree in the side yard. It was about 30 feet in height. Guess what I'll be doing for exercise today. I built a unit similiar to the Total Trainer or Total Gym. Very heavy duty and I can raise the angle to an almost vertical position. I installed a crossbar on the glide board for weights. So, far the most I've used is about 300 pounds and that was for some hack squats I was trying to work into my routine. So, it's pretty good. I'm still using SS somewhat and mixing in other protocols as well. You really should try to stick with SS for a while if your joints are bothering you. My shoulders are doing real good as long as I'm careful with the load I place on them. I'm planning on building a new horizontal leg press machine. I've got an idea that will allow me to have a multible weight factor of 6 to 7 times the actual weight that is loaded. In other words, if I use a 10 pound plate for the poundage, the resistance at the push plate would be 60-70 pounds. We'll see how it works out. And I'm still doing major face plants while trying to stand on that damn Swiss Ball.

Porkchop,
Have you tried the Barrel Squat yet? I think the only one to really give it a go is Diesel. And we haven't heard from him lately. Maybe it was just to much of an exercise for the little guy. And just so you know, all of my clothes are green. And I don't talk with a funny accent. Everyone else does.

Yoda

I cut down an old hollow standard bar (the kind Sears used to sell with the concrete-filled plastic weights) with a pipecutter and used that in the holes in the middle of the glideboard. The thing was supposed to have a total capacity of 400 pounds, but when I got on with 150 pounds of weight and my bodyweight (maybe 180 at the time) to do hack squats, the welds in the sockets that hold the footboard cracked. I haven't used it since. Glad to hear that your workmanship is better than theirs.

Barrel squats -- is that where I wrap my arms around my incredibly large gut and do bodyweight squats? Seriously, no, I haven't tried them yet. I am thinking of pulling my old seabag out of the attic and using it for a sandbag, though. There have been some interesting discussions of sandbag training over on Crossfit, including some thoughts about keeping sandbags a little less messy and more adjustable by using large ziplock bags (double bagged and duct-taped) so that you can add and remove weight. I'd think a sandbag squat would be an interesting sub for the barrel squat. (You don't think I'd hurt my back or knees or something, do you?)

Another idea from Crossfit that I'm mulling over is braiding my own climbing rope (it's gotta be cheaper than buying a commercial one). I have a pretty good spot to hang it from my deck, so this may be another project in the works. One of the posters put up a diagram for a four-strand sinnet braid, that worked well for him. He picked up 100 feet of line (didn't specify the diameter), cut it into fifty foot sections, looped them over a bar and braided himself a 15+ foot climbing rope. They recommended whipping the end of the climbing rope, but I wonder whether I could tie a monkey fist there instead. I think that would look pretty nice. Of course, I might fall off, that would be bad. Now, I need to go find a marlinspike . . .

Porkchop,

I know what you mean with the Total Gym. I had one a long time ago and ran into the same problem. I don't think they were meant to be used the way we would use them. But the concept is great. That's why I went ahead and built this one.

Barrel Squats-The seabag is a good idea if you can get it full enough to really reach around it. I have visions of the middle of it collapsing (spelling) while performing a squat, though. That's why the barrel is good. With the lid on, it won't collapse. How do you spell that word? (collapse) And the barrel forces you to keep your back straight.

Marlin spike, fid, monkey fist. Gawd, I haven't hear those words since I got out of the good old USCG. Here's what I think you're going to have to do if you want a line to climb. Braid in a monkey fist every 12 inches. That way, with all that extra body weight you're carrying, you can put your feet on them to hold yourownself up. Otherwise, it's going to be a big SPLAT. Why don't you just go to a shipyard and get some used line. Splice a loop in the end, make a huge monkey fist at the bottom and let it swing. Maybe you could make the monkey fist around a Spanish Kettlebell to hold the line straight. YaHa!!! I crack myownself up.

Yoda

Yo Ho Ho Porkchop,

That was funny. I'm still laughing. But seriously, no one has answered my question. How does one know if he's lifting with an alien Kettlebell? If it's green, does the person really know for sure that he's got a stolen Kettlebell belonging to a Jedi? Or is it from an Irishman that lost it while pulling potatoes in the lower 40?

So, what kind is it? How do you tell? If you are really lifting with a Russian Kettlebell do you know the weight in Kilos or is it okay to use poundage? If it were a French Kettlebell do you workout in a skirt? Help me out here, please.

Before I forget, check out cbass.com for the latest article from Clarence. Pretty interesting. I guess there are more people than originally thought that are trying Tabata.

Yoda

You have to wear one of those fur hats, like Kruschev or Brezhnev, in order to do it right.

If you work out with a French kettlebell, you will be required to wear a tutu and a black beret, stroke the kettlebell indecently, smoke a cigarette when you are done, and post pictures of the whole thing. (And, by the way, the weight of a French kettlebell is denominated in "poodles" -- somewhat smaller and more refined than the Russian "pood.")

If you work out with a Scottish kettlebell, it's not weightlifting, it's curling, and you'd better be wearing a kilt, or at least a tam-o-shanter.

If you come across a green kettlebell, and it doesn't levitate on its own, it's Irish, not Jedi -- have a beer. Irish kettlebells are measured in pints.

I hope this clears things up.

I still say this is worth taking a look at. Interested in opinions...

http://www.dolfzine.com/page459.htm

Any equipment that requires development of functional strength and uses the whole kinetic chain in stabilising the movement is a huge improvement on static machines or isolating exercises.
Be warned if you are not used to doing this kind of work then take it easy as injury can be easily done.
Great fun!
