Congratulations to everyone for all the meters while I was away. I just drove non-stop from Salt Lake City back to Seattle -- watched the meteor showers as I drove through the mountains of Oregon and Washington (very nice). Now I have to motivate myself to go to the gym and row a half-marathon, before I pick up my son at the airport this evening.

Mike

Thanks for the welcome! I just started rowing on 8/4/05, so at this point I'm only good for @ 12,000 meters/week, but as I progress no doubt that number will go up substantially. My best friend (who's very high up in the 40-49 age-group rankings) recommended the erg to me to help me to get in shape. I hope to do that, and hopefully, be "somewhat" competive within the rankings someday. I'm taking it very seriously using RowPro and keeping a spreadsheet with all of my rows. Tough exercise, but a great one. Again, glad to be here. Also, anyone who wishes to contact me feel free. My email is worldted@yahoo.com.

Sincerely,

Ted
Hello All,

I have just signed up as a member after having my first session on a Concept2. I read about the machine in an article today, checked eBay for some quotes and the website for some information.
I went down to my gym and was happy to find two machines in working order. Put in a 30 minute session and logged 6,338m. I am 48 years old and martial arts and surfing are what inspire and center me but I do not do enough of either of them to keep me at my optimal weight. I am 6'3" and 234lbs and am aiming for 210lbs.

I came home and found your forum and read through the 27 pages. It was highly informative and very helpful. Congratulations to everyone for the effort exerted and the results achieved. I am looking forward to being a contributing member of the team.

regards,

david

Here's what the C2 Fall Update 2002 recommends:

* You should avoid heels that rise up too far, as they may irritate your achilles tendon at the finish of the stroke.

* Seat comfort may also be affected by the height of the Flexfoot heel cups. If your feet are too low, the backs of your thighs may rest harder against the front edge of the seat, tending to cut off circulation to the seat area as well.

* In fact, there are a number of factors that determine the best Flexfoot setting for any given person. In general, you should set the Flexfoot so that the strap crosses the ball of your foot. However, the less flexible you are, the lower you will probably want your feet. Similarly, if you haven't yet worked off all that spare tire around the mid-section, you may also need to set your feet a little lower than a lean person with similar foot-size. Finally, if you row in socks, you will want to set the Flexfoot higher than when you row with shoes on. See chart below.

Foot size --- Flexfoot Hole #
Women's 6 --- 1-2
Women's 7 with shoes on --- 2-3
with shoes off --- 1-2
Women's 9/(Men's 7) --- 3-4
Men's 10 --- 4-5
Men's 12-13 --- 4-6

I row tonight - since my heels ached all yesterday I wanted to give them a longer rest. I think I read in the technique forum that your toes should be even with the top of the footplate. I also row strapless (if that makes a difference). That's what works for me!

I have had achilles tendonitis brought on by running so can relate with your predicament. Good luck!

Mark
Welcome to all the new members, it's nice to move up in the team standings!

I just got done with my first full marathon, and all I can say is that was re-friggin-diculous. I don't see how some of you do that on a regular basis. Hopefully now a HM will seem really easy!

Refresh my memory- how many meters is a marthon, and how long did it take you? Did you do this at home or a gym? What do you do to combat boredom for that length of time?

The only marathon I have ever done was an on water one, and not an experience I wish to repeat anytime soon! We had come down planning to row in a mixed 8 in a borrowed boat, and when we arrived they had brought us two fours. So, the guys went in one, and the girls in another. Considering we never rowed in fours, it was a *long* row. Talk about kissing the ground when we got to the dock!

Did ya'll see we're at 7th place now? Yeah!

Julie

I row at home, thankfully, in the basement where it's nice and cool! A full marathon is 42,195 meters.

As far as the boredom goes, thank God for FOX Saturday baseball I usually watch baseball when I row, and when baseball season is over, I'll watch hockey or football. I just try not to think about how many meters I have left and try to get into the game, or think about what % done I am (I that every once in awhile to distract myself). I tried listening to the radio when I was starting rowing, but I always get bored with that around the hour mark. I might try watching DVDS or something one of these days. But for now, sports does it for me.

When a big wave comes, take a deep breath and duck dive with your board under it. Guessing you surf ( I do) anyhoots, welcome to the club.

Scott

Thank you, Scott.
I will remember that. Spending September in Fiji on a surf mission by sailboat. Spending some time in Hawaii both ways. Looking forward to duck diving, and pulling into, some pristine barrels.

I have been inhaling on the pull and exhaling on the release which seems counterintuitive but I find it hard to inhale when compressing into my knees.

Stay tubed,
david

QUOTE(Jumpsoda @ Aug 14 2005, 07:45 AM)

When a big wave comes, take a deep breath and duck dive with your board under it. Guessing you surf ( I do) anyhoots, welcome to the club.

Scott

(Okay, so that's really simplistic, but it helps me remember to drive with my legs....) So, breathe out on the drive and in on the recovery. Like when you're lifting weights. Make sense? Also works better because the recovery should be *much* longer than the drive, giving you the time to inhale. I'm working on making sure I'm exhaling/driving for "one" and then inhaling/recovering for "one-two-three". (Thanks for the reminder, Grace!)

Are you possibly coming too far forward at the catch so that it restricts your breathing? Or 'hunching' forward rather than sitting up straight? Are you having trouble with this just at all stroke ratings, or just higher ones? Just some things to consider.

Julie
