Hi, I just logged on to the forum for the first time in a while and discovered Ducks In A Row. This is the place for me! Especially since I just got back from an all-day birding trip to Point Reyes. How could I resist a rowing forum moderated by a Bufflehead?<br /><br />I am 67 (in a week) and am a lightweight. I've been erging for three years and am in the slow but steady category. I started on a dare - my husband was going to the BIRC and my daughter came up with a list of twenty reasons why I had to participate even if I had never erged before. My goal was to finish, which I did, and I've been erging ever since. However, I'm definitely not the competitive type. I erg for fitness, usually doing a 30 minute piece. Any kind of motivation works for me - so maybe this "team" will keep me erging.<br /><br />Silly65

Yeah - more birders out there!! <br />Very glad to have you aboard, Silly65! This is indeed the place for encouragement! I am already motivated by you - I hope I can keep rowing for many years to come.<br />As a matter of fact, all of you have been very motivating lately. That ole Ritz is just logging meters like there's no tomorrow! And snappy, I see you're getting back into things. I've been a little swamped here at work, so I haven't had the time to reply so much of late. Hmmmm - swamp! Ducks like swamps I should think! <br />I'll waddle over to the weekly workout thread tonight and fill you in on what I've been up to. Let's hear from all of you! OK. I guess I should actually introduce myself. My name is Rachel. I just turned 34 years old. I did a bit of rowing in grad school but it was not a very organized program and we didn't really have a real coach. I rowed primarily in a 4, bow seat. I still remember the early morning practices on the Mississippi river with a red strobe light clipped to my back to alert any oncoming boats... We didn't do much work on an erg beyond basic technique work that is easier on land than in the water. I only rowed for 1 season before being in a pretty good car accident that had stopped me from being very active. <br />I recently decided that it was time to get serious about losing weight and getting back in shape. I loved rowing and my partner had always wanted to row so we bit the bullet and got a C2, model D at the end of January of this year and we are loving it. I'd love to be able to do a half marathon in the relatively near future. For a while I was trying to keep up with Kathi's meters but I do not think it's possible. Kathi, you are an animal. How do you find the time to get so many meters logged?<br />I live in Sacramento, CA with my partner of almost 7 years and our 3 kitties.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull! Yes. That's exactly it. I loved that book and I loved Richard Bach's other books as well. I'm impressed. I don't think anyone has ever made the connection and most folks just look at me blankly when I tell them about the book.<br /><br />I'll keep posting. Probably meters more than words in most cases but I'll do my best to stay active....

Hi Seagulldc! Welcome to the pond! <br /><br />Hey Snappy... I noticed that we started on the same day too! What a coincidence!<br /><br />As far as all those meters I have logged, I happen to be very lucky and work at home, so it makes finding time to workout much easier, especially since prior to getting the erg, we were going to the gym almost everyday and that took more than 2-1/2 hours between getting ready, the drive, waiting for machines and working out (and I didn't get half the workout I do now). Having the erg right here, not only gives me more time to workout, but it motivates me to workout regularly. My work is also very sedentary so I usually have quite a bit of energy to release after a long shift. <br /><br />I guess I have extra motivation, because not only do I really want to be in the best shape possible, but I also love how proud my husband is of me. He was my best friend, coach, and cheerleader all rolled into one when I was changing my lifestyle three years ago. It was with his help that I was able to lose more than 100 pounds. He motivated me to get my life back. I absolutely cherish the second chance I was given, and am determined to do everything I can to not only keep the new improved body, but to make it stronger and healthier. <br /><br />Here is a current picture of me in my old pants (these used to be skin tight).<br /><img src='http://www.spadesbook.com/bigpants2.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
