Thanks all.

Debra,
I felt pretty good about it. Considering I haven't been training at all for anything over 1000m.

I haven't seen a schedule yet, so I'm not sure when the races are. I do know that EIRC will be at the beginning of December.

Niall,
Thanks for the well wishing at Masters.

Speedy

Hi Taffs,

Decided to do the HM today (Sunday) as the gym is pretty quiet compared with weekdays and I don't feel such a pariah monopolising the erg. So the first stone has been cast - good luck to all the other Taffs going for it on the 21st.

Godfried, you are no longer on your lonesome in Nonathlon, Debra and I are there plus Carla (in spirit at least).

Terrific tussle at the top end of the board - c'mon Niall you can get into the leading pack with a bit of a surge

Cheers

Martin

PS Chris/Chippy - I just missed out on my PB set last year by 0.8 of a second Serves me right for not checking it out first (just like your 10K last year Chris) !

What day is the 21st? Today is the 19th right? That would be Tuesday, I think I have time for an HM. It will be a just-do-the-meters HM but I'm doing it. Friday was another concert, so this week has not been real good for getting rowing in.

Yesterday went on my first real "organized" bike ride--it was a clinic to learn how to ride in a pack and trade off being the lead rider (on my one annual group ride I usually let people draft me if there's wind or they are pooped all weekend or just go ahead of the group and go my own pace). It was a neat experience getting a chance to draft, and very weird only pulling for a few minutes at a time. Everyone thinks I should buy a new bike but with 2 kids in college next year and for the next 6 that's not happening. But I am going to upgrade my brakes and shifters so they are up on the handlebars for safety reasons. I like to hang back from the rider in front about 10" to far because I don't feel confident of being able to stop if I have to, since they are very stiff and old brake levers.

One more concert to go--July 3--and then, sadly, I am dropping all orchestral work for 2 years. Faced with a choice of dropping fitness time (which I barely do enough of anyway) or dropping about half of my musical time, I decided to drop group performance work and concentrate on solo work and technique until my daughter graduates highschool. Trying to keep this all up now that I'm a real grown up with a full time job is basically impossible and Mel will only be home with me two more years. I will really miss the performances, but it will be great not to be under this learn-a-symphony-plus-a-concerto-every-2-months pressure and be able to work out more consistently.

sign me "planning to be a more commited Taff"

Bad news regarding dropping the orchestral stuff, Carla. You're bound to miss it, but I dare say you'll get used to it, particularly as you know it's not dropped permanently.

As for riding behind other riders, I remember one time I was so close to the guy in front that our tyres kissed a few times. Luckily not enough contact to throw either of us off. I wouldn't normally ride that close, but I was deliberately seeing how close I could maintain a gap that time.

I guess I should do a half marathon, too. I wonder if the boss will notice if I'm away from my PC for a couple of hours...

Really quite warm and humid today. Not really the weather to sit erging in my stuffy garage - so I'm heading out there now.

Carla when i was younger i did a lot of cycling and was Welsh schoolboy champion at a few distances. I also did time trials as an adult some years ago. To follow a wheel is something you learn and i can still do it now you just sort of ride but are not paying attention to the wheel in front you just sort of get a feel. The more you do it the more you will be compfortable with it. Have a look at the team pursuit on the track boy do they ride close. Stick at it it will pay off.

Porky.

Yes Chippy, I was kicking myself upon checking last year's rankings out of curiosity after I got home and logged the HM Especially as I stopped 3 times for a drink and pulled a few 2:04s for a breather half way through. Work down from FM to 500m - you've given me something to think about thanks Rob, great idea, I always like to incorporate a bit of a twist into my sessions and that really appeals Next Sunday 60 mins. So take your time for the 6:50 2K

Martin

Good showing for us Taffs this weekend at the Regatta. We won the MM 2x D by more than twenty seconds. That's right, the closest boat to us was just over twenty seconds behind.

Next stop World Masters Games in Edmonton.

Speedy

You want to look ahead and keep the cyclist's upper body in your peripheral vision. Never stare at the rear wheel of the rider ahead of you. There are too many small movements from side to side that you don't need to keep track of. If you ever start racing, let us know. I'll tell you a good way to 'steal a wheel.'

If the rider in front of you goes down, it doesn't matter if you're a few inches or a foot or two back, you're going down also. So you might as well stay close and in the draft.

Byron

Great result Dwayne.
20 lengths is an awesome winning margin. Maybe next time you can use both arms!!

For those of us who have memories like sieves, remind us, when is the World Masters Games in Edmonton?
