Carla
Challenge #3....... 10000 in 46.52 at ave pace 2.20.6..Struggled with the last few
sprints could not go under 1.50 pace. .The 30 seconds rests were heaven
but not long enough to catch your breath. But all done and dusted so can sit
back and watch the rest of the show.

Chris
See you have woken up from your sleep,we had better get a move on cos Dykie
is on our trail

Chippy

Hi Guys,

Remember me??

Sorry I've been very absent of late, hope to rectify that now.

Probably best if I give an update on where I've been and what I'm up to now.

Following completion of the Million Metre Challenge at the end of last year (28th December to be exact), I started the New Year with a new training schedule provided by Eddie Fletcher that was designed to get me a new 2K PB at the Manchester GP event. This very much concentrated on quality rather than quantity so I found myself doing half the amount of metres per week than I was doing during the MMC. It was also a little frustrating in that there was no scope for doing any time trials, hence no PBs this year .

All was going well until the middle of January when I strained my lower back (AGAIN!!). Looks like this is going to be my achilles heel!! As a result, I was out of action for 3 weeks and was seriously worried about the loss in fitness not to mention the lack of metres I was contributing to the TA team! Returned to the erg at the beginning of February with a new training schedule (I was going to be a no-show at Manchester so a 2K PB attempt was out of the question).

I'm on week 3 of the training schedule and am steadily getting back the fitness I had prior to the back strain. I've decided to increase my training sessions from 5 per week to 8 and incorporate more cycling. I've always had relatively weak legs (my erg technique utilised upper body strength to make up for the lack of leg power) so I'm hoping that the cycling will develop the leg muscles to enable me to transfer more power through my legs when rowing. As a result, I've joined a Triathlon Forum (TriTalk) to get advise and support in this new aspect of my training. The site provides the facility to have your own Blog so if anyone's interested (and you've actually read this far ) you can take a look at mine here.

Following BIRC last year, I set myself a goal of getting to lightweight for BIRC 2005 as it was clear to me (due to my height) that I had no chance of competing at heavyweight. As a result (and greatly helped by the MMC), I've gone down from 90Kgs (in August 04) to 79Kgs this week. So I'm well on track!

I'm looking forward to doing Carla's challenges but aren't quite ready yet (fitness levels still not 100%). Taff Attack is still the numero uno IR team for me. You guys are so inspirational and supportive that no other team gets close. I'm happy to be a member and look forward to contributing more to the metres and challenges (and forum!).

Niall

Welcome back, Niall!
Glad to hear you are doing better. We have missed you!
One thing I love about rowing is that it keeps me in pretty good shape for biking, so when spring rolls around (I'm a fair weather biker--no gloves for me!) I'm ready to roll.

Did you ever get a Swiss ball? Not that I want to keep beating a dead horse, but the thing is really helpful....

Carla,
Wanted to clarify challenge #3. Do you mean do a total of 10k? Or are you saying do as much distance as you can at the pace you've stated below?

QUOTE

#3 2/13--2/19 Total distance: 10K Start at your 5K pace & do 100m sprints every 500m, rest 30 seconds after the sprints

I'm thinkin' if this is the former, then this one should be an easy three points. Especially with the 30 sec rest between the sprints. Or am I reading this wrong?

Dwayne

Sorry Chippy, but looks like you stuffed up the 10Ker According to Carla's strict rules we are supposed to do 400m at 5K PB pace then a 100m sprint after the first one (which is 500m at 5K PB pace followed by a 100m sprint) ! Looks like you have to do it again

"The Judges"

The total distance is 10K, 8100 of it at your 5K pace, the rest at a sprint. It may even be easy for me. I'm not sure. I sometimes "do" this work out, but I've never done it strictly; and actually, I usually do it without the rests until the last half, when they suggest themselves rather strongly. I was just trying to think up some variety and thought of this, modifying it so it was more regimented.

.....some of these Challenges may be Challenges, and some of them may not be. That's what you get when you have a total amateur running the show!

BTW, did you see Godfried's charts for this? He's worked yours out to the second and meter so you can see exactly what you have to do. Look at his post #2134 for a link to your chart.

Have fun! I think next's weeks might be a real hum-dinger...
