you really have to make sure you are sitting correctly on the erg as well. I see most people sitting with the seat too far back. This will help your butt for longer peices and keep your lower back in a healthy position. Sitting with legs fully extended, the front of the seat should be definitively touching and underneath your hamstrings. Thats also how you know that you have properly executed the pivot in your recovery before you start leg compression. I wish I had some firm number so you can know if you are doing it correctly, but everybody's body is different. chances are though, if you are having butt pain or even sores at the top of your crack, move the seat forward. I log almost 5 million a year wiht plenty of half and full marathons in there, never used a seat pad ever or felt the need for one.
